My orphan drum set is finally finished. I got the last piece today !!!
And this kit turned out differently than I had expected.
I was inspired by Matt Bo Eder’s Frankenstein kit that he put together from orphan drums. I though it was a great idea.
I wanted to put together a kit using individual drums that I felt sounded good. I had hoped to find some expensive drums at a low price.
I started out with a Tama Starclassic Performer B/B Exotix 22 inch Bass Drum. I purchased it on EBay for $250.00. It was brand new but had a small crack in the shell from a shipping accident, which I repaired. I traced the serial number and found out that it is one of only 32 made with the Quilted Bubinga outer ply. A perfect orphan to start my project.

The next drum I found was a floor tom that also was new and also was damaged in shipping. It was a Yamaha Live Custom 15 x 16 inch amber shadow sunburst. The black chrome matches the black chrome on the Tama bass drum. There is a dent in one of the lugs. I purchased it on EBay. The normal price for this drum is $449.00. They were asking $399.00. I offered $300.00 and they accepted my offer. It matches the color of my bass drum really well. I had the opportunity to test drive a Live Custom set at the Yamaha showroom in California. Great sounding drums.

I kept cruising EBay and I found a brand new Yamaha Live Custom 8 x 12 rack tom in amber shadow sunburst. They were asking $280.00. I got it for $200.00. I did not set out to have matching toms but these are great sounding drums.
So the Frankenstein kit, drums of different colors and manufacturers, idea was slowly disappearing. But I guess I still had orphans.

So there I was with a very nice three piece shell pack that cost me $750.00. I had to buy the Tama tom mount brackets that cost me another $100.00.
At this point I had to make a special plate so that the Yamaha tom would mount to the Tama duel tom mount bracket. Here is what the plate looks like.

Here is the Yamaha tom mount.
