Help me make the Octapad Spd30 do what I need.

samedi 25 avril 2015

I've mounted an Octapad on a cymbal stand. I've also mounted 2 cymbal pads and a mesh pad to use as snare. A kick pedal/pad and hi-hat controller sit on each side of the stand. I put this together to take to acoustic gigs where there isn't room to set up an acoustic kit, and to provide drum/percussion sounds at a more controlled volume. It's possible to play with dynamics on this setup, but ultimately, I like that it can only get so loud. Good for those gigs where maybe someone is eating dinner 4 feet from the drum kit. One annoying aspect of it I've found is listening to a recording of one gig, I could hear the tapping of my sticks on the pads over the actual drum sounds.

The other annoyance, after some time playing this kit, Is I'm just not satisfied with the variety and quality of acoustic drum sounds onboard the Octapad, especially cymbal sounds. I have no doubt the integration of a laptop running Superior Drummer will give me the higher quality acoustic sounds I seek, in fact I've already had that working with my TD-11 kit, and the sounds were much more pleasing.

The last piece of the puzzle is being able to create and access custom samples on one or more pads. I'd like a piece of software that lets me edit my own sound file, whether it be a sound effect like a whistle or gun blast, or a 30 second intro with birds chirping and and waves crashing (lol, ?). I've read the St and other devices do this, but is there really no way to do what I want using the Octapad to trigger my own custom samples via midi? Why am I surprised there isn't a simple piece of software dedicated to doing this? The other problem I could imagine would be how to have 2 triggers/pads assigned to one midi software (the sampler) and the rest assigned to sounds in Superior Drummer. Two pieces of software running at the same time with one device. Has there really been nobody that's made this work?

I have 2 midi ports on an M-audio midis port, so if I have to run a couple pads/triggers off my TD-11 brain I'd be willing to do that. I'd just like to avoid purchasing another whole 8 pad unit to do it. Can the pads/trigger inputs on the Octapad be split between internal sounds, midi channels for one software, and other midi channels for another software?

I hope I've made it clear what I want. Hoping someone says "Oh that's easy.", but I haven't been able to find it yet. Thanks
