I am currently struggling to consistently control my rim shots.
I can catch them consistently when I'm playing a loud 2 and 4 backbeat-type of thing. BUT, what I want is to land them at a bit quieter level- like mezzo forte or lower.
I want to be able to play them softer like that in grooves, and also be able to pull them out of hand combinations on the snare.
My problem is, the lower I try to go with the volume, the more I play the dreadful "just rim/no drum" sound.
It seems like the hand technique changes a bit from when I play them loud to when I play them softer.
I've been practicing accented triplets on the snare, and paradiddles, which has been marginally successful.
What I wanted to know is if you guys have a certain way that's helped you practice a very precise, very specific thing.
I really want to focus on this and overcome it- everything I've tried in the past couple of weeks has netted fairly unnoticeable results.
