I know I'm probably overthinking this this, but ...
In the studio version during the chorus after four bars the drummer starts playing a tom pattern for a few bars, then goes back to the hats. This sounds good in the studio because they overdubbed a tambourine to fill the empty space. I've watched a couple of drum covers of the song and I see people do the tom thing, but without that tambourine it gets really empty all of a sudden. So when I play it, I just stay on the hats, and I do more of an "American Girl" beat (kick on 1, 2+, and 3+). But I have never liked not having that tom thing in it so I'm debating giving it a shot.
