tuning issues with new kit, advise needed

mardi 7 avril 2015

I've been playing for about 30 years. Until recently, for the past 25 years, I've played a Yamaha Recording custom(s). I'm used to being able to tune very high for jazz or other styles when I want that sound or tuning low for a powerfully deep tone. With a new kit, I'm having issues and not sure if it's me just being so "in tune" with RC tuning or the kit's inherit limitations / shells / bearing edges. I play pretty much every style so I like to change heads/tuning to meet specific needs. The problem is with the toms. Bass & snare are great.

The new kit is a PDP Concept Maple (12", 14", 20") in standard sized toms. I've tried my usual head combos of

Evans G2 coated / G1 clear reso

Evans EC2 clear / EC reso

Stock "Remo" sigle ply clear / single ply reso that came with kit

rare use of moon gel or Evans rings (I like them wide open usually)

I can get a nice sounding full bodied low end from both the 12 & 14" toms. However, when I tune higher, they choke. On RC's, I could tune tight with either head combo and be just fine. I know I could try some G1's on batter side, but I don't want to buy more heads unless I really need to do so.

Has anyone run into this with the Concept Maples? They seems to have a fairly narrow tuning range (low to mid only) from what I'm seeing. Thanks for any advice!
