I have an 8-piece kit that I have always struggled to get set up into something I like. I am right handed, so if i set it up as "usual" it's alright, but my hats can never be as close as i would like them to be because of the 8 inch tom. And because there are 4 rack toms, the last of the rack toms is not even reachable by my left hand, and pushes the ride to somewhere silly.
I sacrificed a drum, and set it up as a 3 up 2 down kit, and that was alright, but still the hi hat was not good, and the 12" drum i left out is typically very lonely.
My favorite set up is when i realized it could have it set up fully symmetric, with two remote hats that cross to either side. This was great, and i loved it to bits, (still do) but it was much more of a coordination exercise machine rather than a musical instrument after a while, which wasn't a problem, i have another kit which i did all my shows and rehearsals with.
But now, with the addition of a two legged hi hat stand to my collection, I am able to set up my much smaller 6-piece kit to be the coordination machine I desire (as in fully symmetric) and this leaves my larger kit to become my main "music" kit which is great news.

I am just looking for tips on your guys that have massive-ass drum kits, and how you guys set it up. I have never had it comfortable set up as a fully right handed kit. To make things worse, all the drums are square, as in 8x8, 10x10, 12x12....... so the drums are tall as heck, so i cant get them low over the bass drum, they are just too tall.
The sizes are: 8,10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18 and a 20x20 kick.
I would love to hear any set-up ideas you guys have for larger kits!
