I'm a relatively new drummer and the thing that I'm having the most trouble with (just like every other person who has ever played drums) is 4 way independence. I do have some, I'm up to page 6 of the rudimental ritual using brushes and doing the bossa nova foot ostinato, but improvising with all four limbs in various ways... nope. I can play some simple grooves and improvise with the kick and snare a little bit, but still nowhere where I want to be.
I was talking to a friend who's an incredible jazz drummer about this and he said he remembers one day it just kind of clicked. He could improvise with all four limbs independently while keeping time and all that. While it probably wasn't so abrupt (one day it just happened when he couldn't do it before) it still makes me wonder if this is normally how it works. Just one day you're brain seems to get it?
