Heya,
I have been a pretty diehard Remo fan for many years, and started to develop a distaste for Evans that I thought may be unfounded (fueled also by the D'Addario / ProMark incorporation, of which I am not a fan, and all that). I've heard a lot about Level 360 heads. I've been in the market for a 13" Snare Head (for my new baby, a 13" * 7" vented Maple Pork Pie Little Squealer), and decided, what the hell. I picked up a Level 360 G1. Here's what I think.
Tuning with these heads is a nice experience. I think there's merit to the advantages Evans has been touting with regards to the collar and ring of the head. I was able to get this head right where I wanted in just a couple minutes.
Sonically, there were ups and downs for me. I was able to tune to a clear, consistent, musical snare-tone fairly quickly. I like how the overtones spread and I like the feel of the head.
HOWEVER, there was something about the head I just couldn't fall in love with. I would say it comes down to timbre. I could get a lot of character from this head; I found it pretty easy to make it speak to me. I just didn't like what it was saying (or how) quite as much as I like the character of the Remo heads I've played.
So basically, the one issue I have with Level 360 heads is a very subjective thing. I didn't like the timbre; others may love it. I think everyone should agree that tuning these heads is great and they seem like a great option. I'm sticking with Remo, but honestly, if some of my comrades in the Remo Master Race want to experiment, they may like Level 360 better.
Peace and Love.
