Hi, I think you guys might be the perfect people to bring this question to. First a bit of background:
I'm currently playing in a 2-person electronic band. I play synths, guitar, and a Roland SPD-SX sample pad for percussion (not all at once). I've been using an Alesis Jamdock with an ipod to play the backing tracks.
All has been working fine for the most part, but we're trying to move away from the Jamdock/ipod combination, for the following reasons:
1) Manipulating the tiny wheel on the ipod is annoying and difficult in a live situation, and occasionally I'll press play only to have the wheel skip one song forward and play the next song.
2) This is our second Jamdock, the first one had a mechanical malfunction (during a performance at SXSW!) and all the bass was suddenly cut out of the song. We blamed the sound man only to discover later to our embarrassment that it was the Jamdock.
3) I'm up at the front of the stage with the singer, and I really don't like the look of having an ipod up there with me. A shallow complaint I know, but I just don't like the look of ipods and computers and things like that on stage. At least a drummer can kinda hide that stuff behind the kit.
I've recently been reading about how people are using their SPD-SX to play the backing tracks. This never occurred to me, I've just been using it for percussion. I would love to use this to play the backing tracks and do away with the ipod altogether.
The problem with that arrangement is, it appears that if I used it to trigger the songs, then I could no longer use it to drum with, because I might actually hit the pad that triggers the song and start the song all over again! That would suck.
So my question is: Would there be a way to trigger the songs with the SPD-SX through something external like a pedal, so that none of the pads themselves triggered the song and that way I could use the machine for both triggering the songs and percussion?
Thanks everyone for your time.
