I'm interested in a maple/oak hybrid snare and am looking at a 14x8 from Pork Pie and Ludwig. The Pork Pie has 4 inner oak plies and 4 outer maple, while the Ludwig has inner and outer oak with 3 plies of maple between (like the Keystones).
I can get these for about the same price, so will there be much difference in sound? In theory the Pork Pie may have more oak characteristics given its construction, but without playing them side by side I'm inclined to assume they're similar.
