G1 vs. G12 vs. G14 on snare

vendredi 3 avril 2015

So i recently changed my kit from Tama Silverstar to a beautiful piano white Tama Artstar II. It's my first maple kit and the 6,5" deep snare came with an Evans G2 (coated) by the previous owner. I have preferred a singly-ply head on my previous snares which were birch and a hybrid bubinga/birch...

The G2 on the Artstar II maple snare sounds really good when stroked hard (thick and fat enough, yet open sound with a nice crack) but it's lacking sensitivity. So i'm wondering which head i should put on it next. I'd like to keep it somewhat fat sounding, but i definitely want the single-ply feel.

I fear that a G1 (coated, of course) will thin out the sound and bring up too much high overtones on a maple snare. So i've been trying to find reviews of G12 and G14 on snare. From what i've read and listened so far, even a G14 seems promising, but i'm still not quite convinced.

What do you guys think, would a G12 or G14 keep the sound as "fat" as a G2?

Oh, and i'm an Evans guy... :)
