First week with Yamaha DTX532K

jeudi 9 avril 2015

Last week, I had the good fortune to receive my practice pad kit. With the exception of the DM8+HHat, the Yamaha was the cheapest kit I could find that used a realistic hi-hat pedal. I bought the eKit because I have two young kids, and wanted to practice at night without waking them.

Unboxing and assembly was fairly straight forward. I have a fair mechanical inclination, and the process took about two hours in its entirety when done at a leisurely pace. The manual(s) came in multiple languages, and had multiple fold-out inserts, so finding the correct manual(s) was more difficult than following it.All of the cables were clearly labeled and bundled together in an intuitive way. The only ambiguities were the cymbal felts and the orientation of the HHat seat.

I use an iPad with a gooseneck-clamp to the kit's frame. The frame is sturdy enough that the wobble does not affect the reading of musical notation while I play. There is a bit of wobble which makes small text hard to read when working on my snare technique. Thankfully, the hat and kick are independent of the frame, so the iPad doesn't shake when they are played.

The pads take a bit of getting used to. The hat doesn't have the bounce of a real one. The rubber tom pads have more bounce than a regular tom. The cymbal pads took some adjusting to as I typically do sweeping/glancing crash motions whereas these are rubber and demand you crash directly into them. The snare pad is probably the best feature. Its small size demands the correct sticking, seat position , and posture else you end up with 100% rim-shots or muddled strikes. The kick pad is fairly rigid, allowing blazingly fast doubles/triples.

The built in sounds are not bad, not great. They're certainly not offensive and possibly usable in a pinch. The metronome is wonderful, and the auxiliary input (from the iPad) is great. I can sit at the kit, bring up drumworkout.com or some drumless track on youtube, and go to work without any fuss.

All in all, it has been an overwhelmingly positive experience so far. I intended for the kit to be a glorified practice-pad kit and it has filled the role remarkably well.

Pics to come.
