Cutting down crashes into hats

mercredi 1 avril 2015

I know things like this have likely been covered before, however I thought I'd stick my neck out and see if anyone has any input.

I've got two cracked crash cymbals, a Sabian 16" AAX Stage crash and an HHX 17" Studio Crash. Both have cracks about an inch or less long at the edges. I was wondering if I cut them both down to uniform size whether they might make a good pair of 15ish" hats. I'm aware that this will effect the profile of the cymbals and the sound, but if I were to hammer them outwards and around the edges, would that help to create a set of heavy, large, trashy sounding hi-hats? I know from playing heavier hi hat cymbals that they're often still quite thick at the edges anyway…

…or would it be an utter waste of time and effort?
