Comparing Zildjian K Con , Sabian Artisan and Zildjian Beautiful Baby

Not a particularly good drummer. But I always have a thing about good sounding cymbals and am trying to get more into jazz.

So, I jumped at the chance and bought a 2nd hand Sabian 20" Artisan Light Ride and a 2nd hand Zildjian 19" Armand Beautiful Baby Ride unseen. (I know it's always a gamble. But I can always resell them without much lost.)

I already have a Zildjian 22" K Con medium-thin Low that I love. This will be the baseline for my comparisons.

I never knew how "control" the K Con sound is until I have this Artisan ride next to it. The Artisan is wild, hard to control. It has this harsher metallic stick sound on the top of its very trashy complex wash. The trashy wash sounds very nice when crashed. I guess it's a bit like Zildjian K Custom Complex Ride. A complete surprise is, it doesn't have a bell sound. Hitting the bell will give just the ride sound, but with different overtones which are higher in pitch and more piercing. Still musical, but very weird.

The Beautiful Baby comes with a 3-rivet cluster. The bow sound has a very pleasant and mellow bright tone. It has the vibe of Joe Morello's ride in Take Five. The rivets add a good amount of sizzle. I gently taped up the rivets to hear how it sounded without them. It can be partly because of its smaller size, partly because I got a heavier sample and partly because I'm used to K Con's rich wash, the wash is a bit stiffer than my liking. That may be the very reason why Armand Zildjian installed rivets to it in the first place. Its crash sound is sweet, full and rounded. But being a ride, it's a given that it isn't as sensitive nor speaks as quick as a thin crash.

I can see the BB can be a good 2nd ride complementing my K Con. But I'm not sure what to do to the Artisan. It has some very unique sound. And I like it's trashy tone. But somehow it just doesn't go well with the K Con. Maybe it'll grow on me over time...
