HELP........WHICH DRUM STICK

I have seen drumsticks for $2 and some for $20 ...what the...but im looking for sticks for playing on a practice pads only. I have never play a drumset as of yet (but will one day) but would spent at least six months on the practice pads. the question is, are $2 sticks good for that purpose or should I get use to a good pair and spend at least $10....thank for all the help
