I find it incredibly hard to listen to cymbals in a store when not in the context of drums and know if its the sound I'm looking for. I never understood how people can walk through a wall of display cymbals, hit them solo (without accompanying drums or other instruments) and know if they're the right ones. Sometimes I think players already know what cymbal they want and do some quick sticking to either impress themselves or the store staff.
Sure I can write off certain cymbals or lines of cymbals with a quick test because they're so far away from what I'm looking for. I can tell if I like or dislike the sound I hear, but when I get to cymbals that are in the ballpark of what I'm looking for, its damn near impossible for me to decide if they're going to work well within the context of my drums and my playing.
Drums are hard enough for me...cymbals take it to another level. I just can't get my ears around cymbals without context.
Anyone else? Any pointers?
