New solo - low tuning and whipped cream rolls ;)

vendredi 27 mars 2015

I've been inspired to get a good snare sound tuned down. So I started experimenting with it a few weeks ago and here's a solo highlighting a down-tuned 6.5 Supraphonic with a coated emperor. The kit is my usual classic maple (also in need of new heads). I put the Zoom Q3HD on a mic stand and had it looking over my left shoulder, so it picked up basically what I was hearing - although I'm sure it didn't catch the fluffy lowness of my 24" bass drum with full front reso head. (I set the Zoom input to "low" when recording so if I decided to play really loud, it wouldn't overdrive the microphones. So this video - like all my videos - will play a little softer than normal. Turn up a little or wear headphones and turn up).

I'm diggin' the low snare tuning. I've always tuned a bit high to cut through stuff, but now I'm thinking sometimes it scares people away. I theorized in another thread that Don Henley's drum sound was probably one of the reasons people didn't mind hearing the Eagles - he wasn't bashing you in the head with his sound. His sound blended well with the band and the song and this made the Eagles the perfect background music in an office environment, or you could actively listen to them as a fan. I'm sure we've all listened to music where it didn't matter what you did, it wasn't going to stay in the background - it will eventually beat its way to the front of your thoughts and dominate everything.

A lower drum tuning allows you to draw people in and keep them there. Sometimes I'd listen to Steve Gadd and his sound was like that too. He'd draw you in (of course with his playing) with that non-cutting sound and keep you there listening.

This video also demonstrates my "whipped cream" rolling. I've been working on it and wanted to show that off. I remember being a kid and just being entranced by a Buddy or Louie buzz roll, I knew if I learned how to do that ok, my touch on the kit would benefit. I'm still working on it, but that's my state-of-the-art for now.

I hope you guys like it, and don't mind spending 4-minutes of your time ;)
