Remo Powerstroke 4

mardi 31 mars 2015

Hey all - I used to swear I wouldn't use anything thicker than an Emperor head, but now that I'm playing more for my microphones, I thought I'd experiment with new heads. I put an old Pinstripe on one of those old floor toms and really dug the low end (I've never used them on a kit before) but then I decided that "more is more" and I went down to my local shop and picked up a bunch of Remo Powerstroke 4 heads for the kit.

In a word: AWESOME.

It's a double-ply head, with a control ring around the edge (a PS3 is a single-ply head with the ring, this is, well, more).

My classic maples now sound like an entirely different kit. I was always going for that higher-pitched jazz sound because I want them to sound like drums to the guy 20 rows back without being mic'ed up. But in my recording/practice room, I'm not having to worry about that so I'm getting instant fat-ness.

I'm still using reso heads, and the bass drum is especially deep now. They thunder, but they're not scary thunderous. When I have some time I'll post a recording. I'll let them settle in for a few days.

But this old dog is learning a new trick, so I'm proud of myself for trying it and having it work. If you've been thinking about low, and thuddy (but still sounding like drums), try these. You won't be disappointed!
