Back in the day,a lot of us jobbers made decent money playing weddings and dances at places like the VFW and small clubs(ask Vince Colaiuta).
Polkas were always a standard at weddings cause you had to know at least a couple to get by.
Part of the combo was an accordion player and believe it or not, before 1960 was the most studied instrument in America.
One of my worst experiences was at UC San Diego(I was studying experimental percussion with Jean Charles Francois) where on May 1st ,because I could play a polka ,was asked by an accordion player to fill in for a paying noon gig ($20 bucks).
I said ,oh what the hell ,an easy $20 bucks.
They students proceeded to throw pennies and oranges at us for the 30 or so minutes we played.
After the gig ,the accordion player who was from Orange County, asked me if I wanted to play some gigs up there and I said no thank you.
So the question is why all the hate?
I mean you can hum a Polka ,but not Varese.
