Salt Water Bath for Cymbals?

dimanche 1 mars 2015

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of exploring possibilities with salt water baths for a couple cymbals, for a couple reasons. In the Big and Ugly thread, this was mentioned, and I noticed that opentune posted some hats he had modified, which looked interesting. The cymbals in question are a 20" Sabian HHX Stage Ride, 14"/16"/18" HHX X-Plosion Crashes, 14" HHX Stage Hats and a 10" HHX Splash. All are in Brilliant Finish. My purposes are as follows:

Sonically: I'm looking for some jazzier tones. The Stage Ride is a great versatile option, but as I've been expanding my body of work, it seems like my life's work will be mostly in jazz situations. I want to specialize the Stage Ride to sound a little "dirtier," with more wash, a slightly subtler attack and a bit more complexity. Something like an HHX Legacy or an AGOP Signature -- dark, smoky, and washy. In a similar vein, I'd like the other cymbals to be a bit darker.

Aesthetically: As I mentioned, these cymbals came in brilliant finish, which my retailer didn't specify. I was a bit bummed because for some reason, I very much prefer a natural finish kind of look (maybe similar to how I don't like sparkle wraps?). Anyway, I think the "ugly" style is pretty interesting-looking and would give a good aesthetic character.

If there are other / better ways to achieve what I want sonically and aesthetically, any input would be appreciated.

Also, if I WAS to bathe my cymbals in salt water, is there a specific way to do it?

Thanks for the help
