OK, I have this crazy thought, wondering if anybody has ever seen this or maybe has first hand experience...
I am thinking about putting Ayotte style wood hoops and claws on a recently acquired Yamaha Club Custom set. I need to add gaskets under the tom and snare lugs so that I don't have bad lug splay/axial alignment/whateveryouwannacallit.
No way am I putting rubber gaskets on these drums. Just kills the shell resonance. Maybe plastic, maybe something else.
What I really would like is a maple coloured wood gasket- matching the profile of the lug , just slightly larger (1/16" maybe?) than the lug. The idea here is that maple would be light, if not resonant -then not hindering resonance, and it might look nice matching the light maple in the hoops and contrasting the dark wood shells.
Am I nuts, is this possible? Is there a more appropriate type of wood for this?
