Dillinger Escape Plan (Drum Cover) - Prancer + Transcription

I was playing in the Dillinger Escape Plan ensemble this semester at Berklee and we had to learn a bunch of their tunes and they are mega hard!

Check it out!

Mucking about with the relative tempo

This is a good illustration of how to take a cadence (in this case 17/8 and then the "chorus" of 7/4) and then speed it up or slow it down. This tune always needed something else to nudge it along, I think we got it here.

Older pedals > newer pedals!?

I've been drumming for almost two decades and in that time frame I've gone through a number of different kick pedals, but I keep coming back to twenty year old (80s??) DW 5000 and (90s??) Tama pedals!

Making any kind of adjustment on either pedal is very simple and straight forward, I took them both apart recently for a tune up and had them both dialed in within 10-15 minutes.

With newer pedals it feels like every company is trying to reinvent the wheel!

I had Tama Speed Cobras for a few months and it took me a very long time to get them dialed in and I had to read through numerous pages of the owner's manual to do so.

RANT OVER!!

For Uncle Larry and the fans

For those of you who are fans of my avatars (they're all the same lady, you know), here's a couple of new shots we just did in the last couple of days (I spend quite a bit of time as a semi-professional photographer as well). This session was fun because although I show up with some kind of artificial lighting always, this time we took her chair and faced it towards a window and opened the blinds a bit. It was nice to just shoot the camera and not worry about all that other lighting stuff.

So these two are for Larry ;)

Channeling Kris Myers in one of my band's originals

I've been listening to a ridiculous amount of Umphrey's McGee lately (The London Session is so good) and I've been thinking of ways to incorporate more toms into my usual playing - I love the way Kris Myers uses the various pieces of his kit and I've been doing my best to take some of his ideas and use my toms for more than just fills or as a stand-in ride cymbal.

So here's the video: http://ift.tt/1GJwcfH

The song is called Burn; our lead guitarist has had the idea floating around for a few years and we've been fleshing it out in various ways for the last year and a half. It's probably my favorite tune to play because we can take that middle section in a range of directions - sometimes it's a guitar solo, sometimes it's a bass solo, and sometimes we just play around with the groove like in this version here. Having three classically- and jazz-educated musicians in the band (lead guitarist, bassist, and myself) allows us all to be more free with what we do and it's a lot of fun.

I recorded, mixed, and edited the video and I'm really happy with the way my drums sound. I'm using a purple 13" DW Craviotto snare in this video and I'm in love with the snare tone.

Also, if anyone is interested, the bass tone is simply Dan's 70s P Bass through an A Designs REDDI. The REDDI is so ridiculously fat-sounding.

8 piece kits for reasonable prices?

Hey, I put some thought into it, and what I decided I wanted was an 8 piece kit, and that would basically encompass what I needed for the next millenia. There are a couple problems with this:
1) Most 8 piece kits are double bass drum, so really as far as I'm concerned, they're actually a 7 piece kit with a show offy bass drum.

Actually, that's pretty much the main problem.

What I'm looking for is 3 rack toms, 3 floor toms, 1 kick, 1 (maybe 2 [9-piece]) snare(s). Ideally, the high tom would be about a 12", but 10" wouldn't be bad. Right now I'm using 2 (I think) 18" floor toms, and I really like that dimension. I don't know if 3 18" or 2 18" + 1 20" would be better. Do you guys think I could get enough range out of 3 18s to make it worth having 3? Or would the 20 be necessary to get the motion out of the drums that I'm looking for (I hope you have an idea).

Any suggestions on kits that fall into the ball park? Guitar center found 1 kit that matched this description, with a 10 up top. This kit is located in New Hampshire, and I live in Indiana. They can ship it, but I would really like to try before I buy, although there is a 30 day money back guarantee.

Bearing Edge Question

Hi guys. So, I'm thinking about "building" my own snare drum. It's more of an "assembly" of various parts since being I don't have a workshop here at college. I've found few places online that offer decent prices on shells and drilling services, and I'd like to have some input from you all as well.

I'm looking at a 14"x6.5", Keller 5 ply maple shell with reinforcement rings. I have a set of older Rogers Dynasonic hardware (Minus the snare bridge) that I plan to use. (Note: I've looked into making a Dynasonic clone, but it's not really what I'm looking for at the moment.) It will mainly be used for Jazz, though I also do some recording work and am always looking for new sounds.

In looking at what bearing edge to get, I was wondering what will give me the best overall combination of "vintage" and "versatility?" I was thinking of a 45 degree edge on the Reso side, and a vintage 30 degree edge on the batter.

I sometimes wonder if I'm over-thinking this and should just go with dual 45's. But I also want to get it right the first time and save myself from not liking the results.

Thoughts?
Bearing Edge Question

triggering acoustic kick drum

I want to use my acoustic kick drum and trigger electronic kick sounds
using the Roland SPD SX.

I use a Roland RT-10k trigger.

I know that mostly people use triggers on acoustic kicks to enhance the natural kick sound but this is not what I need to do.
We use some very specific electronic kick sounds and some of them really
differ quite a bit from acoustic kick sounds.

I don't want to use a kick trigger pedal.

I wanna use my kick but need to find a way to mute the kick as much as possible without losing too much vibration for the trigger to still work.

I don't think a sound off-pad is any good as it tends to fall off easily and I've used a Mesh head but it didn't last long (yes probably I've used the wrong beater and should've used a plastic one instead of a felt one).

So I will try to mute my kick by stuffing it with pillows or a blanket.

But I want to ask if anyone got experience with this kind of setup. Using acoustic kicks with triggers and muting the acoustic kick sound.

Anyone tried the blanket approach?
Are the other ways that worked?

Blake Richardson + Tomas Haake + Elliot Hoffman

Hey all, so I'm new here, but I've been on a drum kick lately (thank god). I've really started getting addicted to getting better (again), and have been 'studying' the above drummers.
I really like Blakes hands, and his syncopation between the drums and guitar, you know, the way he "plays the guitar parts on the drums" from time to time. It just fits so well. This is fairly recent, and for the past couple months I've been half-assed trying to learn 'Obfuscation' from TGMD. A big problem with this, is that sometimes I find it hard to make out what he's doing. I probably should mention I only learn by ear, and also that I'm not trying to turn myself into a blake clone, but I definitely want some of that in my playing (~Progressive Thrash Metal).
Tomas Haake has always been a HUGE influence. There are times where Meshuggah enters my cd player in my truck and doesn't leave for weeks or months... some times even the same album ha!
Elliot Hoffman (carbomb) does probably the most phenominal snare work I've ever heard. Occasionally I'll throw on the Centralia album and sit behind the drum kit and fail/improv my way through the album; I've listened to it so many times that I have it memorized in my head, all the changes and feels, even if I don't actually know how to play it.

My question is this (maybe this should be in the techniques forum?):
What other drummers should I be listening to that could compliment what I'm hearing in these drummers to help expand myself on the kit? I also frequently watch Alex Rudinger on youtube, but haven't gotten around to learning any of his music.

Roland TD-9 Cymbal trigger problem

First of all, pretty much wherever you hit the cymbal, it triggers the head. The rim rarely triggers, and sometimes after you hit the cymbal, it triggers the sound multiple times. I dont understand where this problem came from, these drums are quite old so is it possibly broken?

Paiste 2002 20" Ride Black Stamp date?

I wonder if anyone can help me date my 20" 2002 ride? I've read that the six digit serial number suggests it's from the 70's, but the first number is '0'. Does this mean it's from 1970, or could it be 1980? Full serial# is 030798. Any info would be appreciated.

Live music venues - Houston

I'm in Houston over this coming weekend & the first half of next week, & keen to find some great music. I've looked through various listings & stuff, but of course, all venues say they're great, so I thought I'd ask the guys in the know on here :) I used to frequent Houston a lot 10 years + ago, but I'm guessing the scene has changed massively since then. I'm primarily looking Galleria or downtown as I'll be with others based in those two locations.

Cheers, Andy.

Jazz Drumming, and its benefits for rock

mercredi 29 avril 2015

I picked up Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley and I've been learning jazz hoping it'll improve my rock drumming. I've gotten better over the past month or so but I'm starting to think that I'm becoming a better jazz drummer and not a better rock drummer.

Without directly incorporating jazz beats into my rock style, is there any point?

Issue with Yammy XP80 snare triggering?

Just thought I'd ask here before contacting Yamaha. I'm having an issue with the rim trigger on my xp80 pad. Specifically it's with the trigger segment that is considered the 'rim shot' trigger, I guess you would say. There seems to be a section of it where it registers a softer hit, so the resulting sound is nearly at half volume as opposed to other sections of the trigger.

To describe where it occurs, imagine the the pad as a clockface, with the rom click trigger at the top covering between 10 and 2. That zone triggers perfectly across it's entire zone.

Now the bigger rim shot trigger covers the lower section of the clock. It triggers perfectly from 2 to 5 o'clock, and also from 9 to 10 position. But between that 5 and 9 zone it's picking up a much softer hit and responding with a much lower sound. It makes it very hard to trigger a proper rim shot with my left hand, and I have to try and move my hand around further to reach that 9 o'clock zone.

Just wondering if anyone else has this, or if I might have a fault? Thought it was worth asking first before contacting Yammy.

Thanks heaps.

Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

I don't think until I stumbled on this video had I ever seen him do so; he was such a proponent of the traditional. I don't think it really matters all that much these days and perhaps for this tune he felt that is what worked best.
You have to love how smooth and easy he sails through it.
For myself I wish I had put some effort in to the traditional grip as I can tell for certain things it would sound better but again I don't believe there is any argument anymore as to which is better, what works for you is all that is important. Buddy could play with his ears and it would sound fantastic.

Hihat Footboard Swivels When Playing

Having an odd problem and I cannot find any other posts about it - I've got a Mapex hihat stand (I think it's an H600) and it has a footboard that swivels for better placement. Problem is that it swivels uncontrollably while playing - which is a huge drag. I've got everything tightened up, but perhaps a lug or a nut is missing....

Radar Love (Golden Earring) ... Fast shuffle!

I'm meant to be auditioning for a band in a week. Most songs they've mentioned are fairly straight forward, like Live and Let Die, that sort of thing.

But they also mentioned Radar Love. Now, is it me or is this a one handed shuffle on the snare at about 200bpm?!

http://ift.tt/1Eony5F

That's kind of stumped me. I don't do many shuffles and not at that speed. I could frig it and do it with 2 hands, but it sure feels like cheating!

Does anyone else find that hard? Even with Moeller? I'm sure I could get it with time, but not sure 1 week is enough without cheating.

Thanks,
Mark.

Kreutzmann: Deep Sorrow, Compassion Over Garcia’s Heroin Addiction

Bill Kreutzmann, drummer of the Grateful Dead
By ALAN PAUL -- April 28, 2015 11:47 a.m. ET

Q. You write that when Jerry’s opiate problem became obvious, you all wanted to play with him so much that you turned a blind eye. Could you have done more?

Kreutzmann: We attempted interventions, but he saw a setup for what it was. And he would go to [rehab] places, but he was smarter than the therapists and could outtalk them all. I think 12-step is a great program, but he would have nothing to do with it, firmly believing that a person had the right to do whatever he liked as long as it didn’t hurt other people. But hurt where? Hurt how? Emotional pain can be much more painful than physical pain.

Q. And your pain is still evident.

Kreutzmann: We just had no luck with getting him to leave heroin. The drug owned him and that’s really sad. I was never mad that he was a heroin addict. I felt compassion and deep sorrow. He would play the most forlorn, lonesome-sounding solos. It was the one time where I could really hear inside him and it was a great, deep sadness.

How to you construct your parts?

For quite a few years now I've written all of my drum parts out for every original song that I play. Every beat, every fill, everything written out down to the note. And although I do think this is a good way to do things as it forces me to come up with new ideas that I feel that I never would come up with off the top of my head, doing it this way is starting to feel a bit sterile to me. I almost feel like I'm overthinking things sometimes making the drumming more academic feeling than anything else (at least for me. I can't speak for the listener).

Even though I knew how to read and write music back in the day I hardly ever wrote out any of my drum parts. I mostly came up with things and then played by memory. At times I feel that certain aspects of my playing back in the day were overly simplistic because of this. But my playing did have a certain spontaneity and freedom to it back then as well that I sometimes feel is lacking today.

What I've been thinking of doing is combining both my current way and my old way of constructing drum parts. Writing out ideas while at the same time leaving certain things open for more spontaneity and creativity off the top of my head. I'm thinking that taking this approach may add a bit of spice into my creation of parts in the sense of everything not feeling so mapped out. This will still allow me to push and innovate in my drum part writing while at the same time allowing for the spontaneity that I have not been using in my playing for quite a while.

How do you construct your drum parts? Why do you construct your parts the way you do?
How to you construct your parts?

Are these cymbals good?

A couple days ago I had to run to guitar center real quick to get a pair of hi hats for recording. I'm pretty new to drums so I don't know much at all about gear. The guitar center guy recommended these used 14inch Istanbul Sultan Series hi hats. He kept saying how good they were and how he's surprised no one has gotten them yet and all that. I'm weary of salesman, but I was in a real rush and I knew that I had 30 days to return them. Are these good hats? I'm not a great drummer yet, but the main styles that I'm interested in are: jazz, funk, hip hop, reggae, blues, some rock (although nothing really heavy). Are these good for that? I also paid 179 for them. Good deal or can I find something better?

Thanks.

Here's some pictures of the hats as well.

Speed & how to get it...

Hey guys, this started as a reply to another thread, but I figured I'd toss it in here as it may help some folks out. It's a note about speed and the most effective way I've found to get it:

If you want to play fast, practice no faster than you can play perfectly and consistently with the next faster tempo's technique such that you teach the body what you want it to do. After 20-40 minutes of reps near the top of your comfort zone you can almost always easily jump to the next faster tempo (of course you will eventually hit the point of diminishing returns as you approach warp speed).

Many people practice "wrong" their whole lives and live frustrated at the lack of progress. It's amazing how quickly roadblocks can be removed with a bit of guidance (like skype lessons & drumworkout.com). I find that when students make a few technical changes and retrain some hand motions, they quickly make great gains in groove, time, feel, flow, endurance and speed. (And any injuries of course are things of the past, an injury tells you that you're doing something wrong.)

And, my approach isn't really about speed or chops, it's about building relaxed musical hands where there's as much nature involved as possible and minimal player's influence on the stick. It's about getting out of your own way and learning how to most effectively manipulate the stick. Speed & chops are just natural byproducts.

My fills are always in 8th notes/slower note rates, help!

Most of my fills when soloing or when just playing the song are mostly eighth notes or slower note rates. Sometimes I'll play sixteenths here and there but I have a tendency to stick to 8th notes. I can't seem to get out of it. I usually play what I 'hear in my head' but that means that I'm only 'hearing' 8th notes! What can I do to change this? I don't want to be confined to playing 8th notes all the time.. it gets boring after a while for both me and mainly for the other band members as well. Sometimes I try to tell myself to play more sixteenths when I play but for the most part, I don't even think while I'm playing and for some reason I get stuck in 8th note land. Please help!

Our band plays this tune, I know how to play the intro thie issue is my damn foot. I can't seem to play it clean, or I rush the tempo. I have a Pearl Eliminator pedal and I normally use the black cam, however I have tried all the cams, tried different tensions, practicing with the metronome at 120, Just can't seem to dial it in in my old age. As a youth with my trusty old Ghost pedal, piece of cake. So just to make it clean I made up a hybrid triplet fill that works it's just that it's really pissing me off. How crucial is stick choice to snare tone

Talking mostly about rim shots here.....

When I hear a snappy/cracky funk backbeat, i imagine a shallow-ish snare tuned up high, being hit with a thin stick (absolute max 5a)

When i hear a beefy heavy metal type backbeat i imagine a deep snare with medium tuning being hit with a tree trunkish 2b stick.

Now obviously, drum size and tuning play the bigger part here, but the more I imagine these situations in my minds eye, the more I am visualising different sticks!

Irregardless of volume, just purely in the pitch of the drum, how crucial is stick choice?

comfort for double drummers

Throughout history, some bands, orchestras have utilized the services of two drummers in their performances. Two kits usually placed on either side of the other performers. Sometimes one will be on a platform to designate "1st chair" aptitude while the runner up is below on the main stage. NOW....just to level the playing field, and make both drummers comfortable, Progressive Percussion LTD. is offering the Drummers Couch. Two drum sets and one extremely comfy "double" throne. Meinl Classics Custom Extreme Metal ride

Hi,
the Meinl Classics Custom 20" Extreme Metal ride doesn't cost much yet it sounds amazing (for metal). I have listened to sounds clips of it online, and I can't work out why it costs so little. Does anybody own it who can say any bad points about the cymbal?

Thanks

DW Toe Stop Measurements Please

Please understand I am NOT looking for opinions/comments about whether or not people like, or use, toe stops.

That said, I like to play farther back on my pedals and I find that when playing heel-down sometimes my primary foot tends to creep forward, even though I have some deck tape on the pedals, so I'd like some details on the DW toe stops. If they don't happen to meet my needs, I'm thinking of making my own toe stops so I can tailor them to the ideal distance for me. Thus, I would appreciate it if someone who has them might be able to tell me:

1) the width of the DW toe stops

2) how far back they reach, from the screw hole to where your foot would hit it. Thanks a lot.

3) length and thread pitch of screw (I assume it's a panhead that sits on top, not a countersunk screw like the stock one that sits flush into the bevel of the footboard)

Thank you.

Alesis DM6 USB Kit Five-Piece Electronic Drum

- Everything is included. I've looked at a lot of drumsets and many don't include everything you need like bass drum pedals and more. This has everything you need to play right our of the box, even a pair of drum sticks. OK, a couple things not included you will need and that's a set of headphones and a throne (chair) to sit on.
- Sturdy, well made components. The natural rubber drum heads are quiet but have a very good feel and rebound to them. The rubber cymbals are not as quiet as the drum heads but do what they are supposed to do very nicely. All metal hi-hat and bass pedals. Wide diameter aluminum frame rails and compoents.
- Very realistic sounding drum samples.
- Dual zone snare. You can make the snare sound like a rimshot when you hit the rim. Or program it for a cowbell when you play "Don't Fear the Reaper". Or make it sound like any of the other drum sounds included.
- Ability to interface with your computer via USB. This opens up a world of options including MIDI and recording your performances on your favorite recording software. I don't know of any sub $500 kit of this quality that does that.

Gibraltar 6608 Heavy Drum Throne

I have been an extremely satisfied Gibraltar hardware customer for years. I have almost all Gibraltar Hardware for my entire set, as well as one of their racks. So I figured I'd try this throne. After having it for a few weeks now, I can't believe I waited so long to get a new one. This one is super rock solid built. Very sturdy, and extremely comfortable. Adjusts pretty easily, but once adjusted, it will never let you down by moving or readjusting. It not only has a regular tightening knob, but also a seperate additional locking mechanism that you can hand tighten with your drum key (same one you would use to tighten the drum heads, hardware, etc). This throne does not wobble, tip, or let you down even under the hardest playing experiences. Whether you a hard rock or metal guy who needs a super strong throne so you can give it all your weight so your legs can give your double bass drum pedals a work out, or you are a jazz muscian that just needs a comfortable balanced seat

kicking around idea of upgrading my bass pedal

Haha - see what I did there?

More seriously - I've only ever played single-bass and the pedal I'm using now is a Gibraltar 4711SC Bass Drum Pedal, which came with the e-kit I'm using (a Yamaha DTX532k).

Being a novice - I know this is a very entry-level pedal but has generally held-up to my style of playing. It occasionally falls apart and squeaks a bit. What does a better (eg "more expensive) pedal get me that I don't have now?

Also, I'm wondering if upgrading a pedal will help me with a difficulty I have playing sixteenths. I have no problem playing, for example consecutive sixteenths going into the upbeat - where I play the &-ah going into the 2 in 4/4 time (shown in first attachment), but have a difficult time playing sixteenths going into the downbeat, where I'd play both the ah-3. I think my problem is foot positioning, not necessarily the pedal itself, and I think I also sit too-high on the throne - but I like to play "down" on the drums and my cheapie thrown seems like it's either going to be too high or too low, and given the choice I'd rather be higher.

Thoughts? Thanks for reading

Seriously cool way to bend wood (SCIENCE. YEA!)

Instead of a steam bath to soften the lingum bonds in the wood, this guy uses ammonia. It essentially does the same thing - disrupts the hydrgogen bonding between the lignum structures to temporarily soften the wood, but the reults are freaking cool. I don't have any experience steam bending wood, but from what I've heard/read, this process seems to get the wood more playable, more easily, with less spring back.

In the video he gets some success bending 3/8" walnut around about a 6" diameter, which is pretty impressive. I think this would definitely work for snares, no matter how thick the shell. Easy.

Mics, Mixers, and Live Sound

Hello everyone! I have a complex problem that I hope someone could point me in the right direction. Please assume I have zero experience with recording/live sound.

Just this past Sunday, my Worship Team Leader stopped me to let me know that he is going to propose a budget to have my kit completely enclosed and mic'd for our Sunday services. Up until now, I have been just on stage behind a plexiglass shield. He wants to try to control the volume a little more and be able to record. I told him that I would do some research.

I have a 7-piece kit with 4 cybals and hat. After a little research, I think I am going to go with the Samson 8-kit plus the Samson 3 pack of snare/tom mics. This will allow me to mic all my toms, bass, hi-hat, and snare (top and bottom), and have two overheads in the x/y setup. 11 mics in total

Which brings me to my delima... I am looking for a 12 channel mixer that will be cost efficient. I plan on keeping that near my kit so I have control over the sound, but then running the output to the main board. I also plan on running the monitor line into the last channel so that I can use the setup as an in ear monitor with headphones.

I hope I made sense and please tell me if I am trying to attain the impossible. I have had no experience with mixers so I don't even know if my idea is even possible. Thank you for your time.

Best vocal interpretation of drum riffs?

lundi 27 avril 2015

My personal favorite is "blick-em" I was in a band where the guitarist asked me to play a couple of "blick-ems" as part of a fill. To this day the phrase still makes me laugh.

Any of you have favorite verbal interpretations?

Incredible "policy" from Memphis Drum Shop

Last Thursday, I bought an $879.00 USD Black Beauty with these guys. Friday went by and no notice about shipment. I wrote to the sales department and no answer. Monday morning: another note and no answer. Just five minutes ago, after my third intent with their sales department, they answered me that Ludwig prohibits them to sell outside the USA. There is no notice about that in the site. In fact, I have bought thirteen new snares from the Internet (five of them by Ludwig) and never had a problem. What do you think? They offer you the product, you get charged for a thousand bucks, and then you get rejected. Nice sales policy. Nice indeed. Long gone are the days when the client had any importance. Its a pity.

Drumtacs

I use as little muffling as possible, maybe a piece of moon gel on my 16" floor tom. It works fine but after a while they moon gel gets pretty dirty.

I just ordered a package of Drumtacs, A bit more expensive than moon gel, $20.00 for 4 of them, plus shipping but thought I would give them a try. I hear that they are pretty good. Anyone using them yet?

Knee pain from double pedals

So i drum every day, and i get knee pain from using double pedals. I play quite fast. So the pain isn't on when im actually playing, it comes when i extend my legs after playing. Recently i took a 2 day break, didn't have any knee pain because of it, then i started drumming again and it started. What could it be? Am i playing too tight or something like that?

sampled drums - how much?

There was a recent piece in the 'Lefsetz Letter' by Bob Ezrin on the music industry. In replies by others today, this one by Elliot Mazer stuck out:

"Wall Street helped create the flattening of music. Numbers became the primary decision controller. Nashville wins since songs and Performance are still the creative driver. But there it sounds like McDrums create the grooves. Most records use the same samples. That drummer is really busy"

It made me wonder what percentage of drums are sampled in rock music today? half, 80%, most?
I would guess its 100% in pop stuff like Katy Perry etc.

the "McDrums" label is kind of funny...but sad too.

Please help - Mabel's leg has come off!

I was just rotating Mabel's bass drum spur back, prior to putting her in her carry case, when it came off in my hand. I've retrieved the spring and washer, but I'm dashed if I can fit the damn thing back on: it's as if the screw/bolt thing isn't long enough to thread in properly. There must be a way to get it back on, surely - but it's defeated me and Mr Madge.

Mabel is a Pearl Vision, if that's relevant.

Thanks in advance!

mounting Roland SPD SX on kick drum

I'm trying to figure out how to fix my Roland SPD SX on my kick drum.
I know that there are stands for it but I want to put it on my kick drum.
If I just put it on it is not stable and it's too low.

Does anyone know of any mounting pieces that can be bought to fix it to
the kick or does anyone have any ideas how to do it yourself?

Cheers

Anyway - when I collected all these mismatched drums, I hadn't spent a lot of time with them. But this weekend I spent some time, changing out heads, putting away drums I wouldn't use and now the kit sounds great - much better than it looks!

I upgraded all the heads - the toms got new pinstripes on top and clear emperors on the bottoms. The bass drum got a PowerStroke4 (I'm hooked on these now) along with the 5" Supra - and this kit sounds almost as good and thuddy as my classic maples! I kept wondering why I couldn't improve the bass drum sound with a PowerStroke 3 at first and discovered that the stock reso head just sucks. I put a smooth white emperor with a 2" felt strip, and combined with the PS4, for a 20-inch bass drum, it's getting close to rivaling the deepness I get with my 14x24 Ludwig (but not that close).

Now I have a kit that can transport in the back of my truck with no cases. I may not use the 14" floor tom all the time, but the rack tom and 16" floor will always be used. These Visions don't sound that bad when you take the time to replace the heads and give them a good tuning. I'm really surprised.

My DW Collectors Series Kit (Big)

You ever been playing your kit, hitting it good, and just get a powerful urge to show it off? Like just the way the recently adjusted it makes it feel (look) so much better? Welp, that happened to me today. Heres my kit that I bought about three years ago, the shells were made between 2004 and 2012.

The rundown: Maple shells going 10, 12, 14, 16 and 22. The snares are a pearl brass 14x6.5 and a pearl piccolo brass 13x3(?) and that little drum between them is a DW piccolo tom. Heads for the toms are g14s coated, main snare is a G1 (I like it to ring) and the side snare is an HD Dry. Piccolo tom is just a clear EC1.

I have a habit of writing on my heads just cus I saw guitarists doing it with their guitars and I wanted to too. Everythings in pencil. On the toms I have the chemical symbols for various psychedelic drugs, as I am studying them in college. They are, from right to left, Ketamine, Mescaline, LSD and THC. Next to the chemicals are various quotes from the movie They Live cus I'm still a teenager haha. The snare has a quote from Nietzsche (Ich lehre euch die Ubermensch!) and the side snare is a passage from Die Erlkonig, a poem by Goethe. Have those there since I'm minoring in German, though the german and swiss flags behind the kit give that away.

The cymbals from right to left are: 18 in Stagg DH China, 18 in Sabian AA Medium Thin Crash, 13.3 in Zildjian K Custom Hi Hats, 10 in Stagg Furia Splash, 6 in LP Ice Bell (mounted), 18 in Sabian AAX X-plosion Crash, 10 in Sabian AA Splash, 6 in Zildjian A Custom Splash (Mounted, I consider it a bell), 14 in Sabian AA Regular Hats, 20 in Zildjian A Custom Projection Ride, 19 in Sabian AA Medium Crash, 12 in Stagg DH China, 19 in Sabian AAX Xtreme China, 18 in Sabian Vault Crash, Stagg Black Metal Bell (Mounted).

I use the dual Hihats for different sounds. The zildjians I like for the stick definition and stomp chicks while the sabians are good for just laying into when theyre open. That's why I love having them there right between the 12 and 14 inch toms, though I occasionally catch my ride by accident. I mount things on my two splashes because I feel like it maximizes my space. As long as my stick comes in at the right angle, I have no problem hitting what I need. Also its just damn handy having a bell right next to your hihat. The Medium Thin crash I angle purposefully for wash riding with my left hand. I tend to wash ride my medium crash with my right hand and I want to get that ambidexterity working for me. The Medium crash, on the other hand, I angle it slightly down so I can use it as a light ride. Though I would've preferred it if it were in a natural finish, for a drier sound, it still contrasts my zildjian ride well for when I'm playing hip hop or folk or whatevers lighter. The zildjian ride I'm still working on positioning but I like it where it is generally. I use all parts of my ride, the bow, the bell and occasionally to wash ride it. I had problems when it was between the 12 and 14 in toms (that traditional set up) because my splashes and mini china would be over it and hitting the bell would tend to be a problem. So the position now allows me to use all parts of it. My Sabian china, my main china, I just moved it up high and it makes me so giddy. I'm a taller dude, so its not too much of a problem arm wise, and I love having it up high. It gives me space to work other cymbals around down low without cluttering up my toms. I am only worried though, that it'll stress the cymbal out. I had a Zildjian oriental trash china in a similar position and it cracked around the bell while in that position, though it was four or so years old while this sabian is less than a year now.

And naturally, got that Wizards sticker on the front cus they just beat the raptors in the first round of the playoffs and I gotta show my pride!

Anyway, just felt like being an exhibitionist. Hope it pleases the eye. If you wanna see it get played, I do covers right here

Yamaha Recording Customs - Help!!

So, my local music store has a 1980's Yamaha Recording Custom kit, for $599!!! It's all 9000 serial numbers, piano black. 14x22 kick, and a 10, 12, 14 and 15 (yes) set of toms. I think the chrome will clean up nicely, not sure how to rehab the piano black paint. And not sure about the 24" kick. So, any thoughts on the 24" kick and cleaning up the black paint is greatly appreciated. They are marked as 9000 series on the tags, but the Serials are all 9000 something with RC, RT or RF in the number. I might not sleep tonight over this one. Oh, and are black drums not cool anymore? :)

Ludwig snare defect

Hello.

I've recently purchased a brand new black beauty snare from an official dealer.
While I was changing the batter head I observed a point unter the bearing edge (the inside side, so not in touch with the heads) where the nickel platting is missing, and some tiny spots aside that bigger one also without nickel.
Should I worry about this fault? Is it possible to start oxidizing somehow and further destroy the platting.
Of course I understand that this has nothing to do with its sound, it is definitely one of the best metal snare drum I have ever played, and I have played many of them.
I am extra disappointed that Ludwig doesn't publish any contact email address for this cases, not even on the guarantee card..
I'd appreciate any advice.

Serious drummer? (I think not ;)

The band had "one of those nights" last night. Gear issues (keyboards), multiple mistakes, etc, etc, so Andy went into fun mode. I always "play up" a bit on stage. The audience engage with that, so when things aren't going exactly to plan, I turn it up, just to take attention away from the issues, & improve the band vibe. Is that something you do, or am I just weird?

So here's some short clips of me (I have no shame), behaving / playing in a way you haven't seen before. I've put it up here to open up a general conversation on drummers being part of the entertainment presentation - we're so often not :(

Some explanation:

Clip 1/ Irreverence / childishness :)

Clip 2/ Playing up to some audience guy acting like John Travolta in Grease.

Clip 3/ Note to self - don't forget your sweat towel!! I was literally blind for 3 minutes :(

Clip 4/ Tongue pulling air drumming girl get's the animated reciprocal treatment.

Clip 5/ An interlude where we welcome Oz (our lighting guy) back to the lighting desk after his terrible ordeal.

Clip 6/ Guitarist asked me to pace up & get crash heavy on this outro - I obliged (& don't I look stupid!)

Built a Grail kit on a budget

A 3.5 year odyssey is complete... At least my wife thinks so.

I set out to build a complete professional kit on a budget, the goal being to spend 50% of the lowest actual selling price (new) when all the components were added up. In the end I came out spending 53%, or $2820, for a turn key kit that actually sells (not the ridiculous retail list prices) for $5286.

It just goes to show you that with some patience and perseverance, you can build a hell of a kit, for less than you think.

All pieces were "pre-owned" in "like new" to excellent condition purchased from (other drum forums) members, Craigslist, and MusicGoRound.

The Complete list:
DW Performance Pewter Sparkle 6 pc (8,10,12,16,22,6.5x14)
PDP Rack (with 6 extra clamps)
Gibraltar Cymbal Boom Arms (4 each)
DW DWCPRKSBL Rack Mount Snare Basket
DW 9000 Series Remote Hi Hat Stand
DW Dogbone
DW 5000 Accelerator Pedal

Best ride to complement a K Custom Dry Light Ride?

I've been replacing my existing cymbals, and I've just acquired a "20 Dry Light ride. I love it. My other ride is a "20 flat top. I assume it's an older ride from the A series. I like it; it's a brighter, higher-pitched cymbal which is what I want. But I would like to have a ride with a bell (the bell on the dry ride is on the small side) and a little crashability. I'm considering trading out the flat top, along with a 20" swish, for a ride with these features.

What cymbal would you recommend to best complement the dry ride (even it is the existing flat top)?

Sonor vintage series

Here they are! Been playing them a lot lately. I have had them a little while but just got around to posting pictures.

20x14 - warm and punchy. Very focused sound and powerful.
12x8 - One of m favorites. So far I like it tuned higher or lower the best. Medium still works.
14x12 - This little guy gets lower than some 16x16's I have played. Getting it tuned low makes it rumble. Tuned high it gives you that "Gretschy" sound.

The set overall is simple, classy, sounds great and has great tuning range. For the drummer on the go the sizes are perfect. I had more trouble getting in and out of gigs with my 22x18. This 20x14 is the ticket. I also think with this series that you could get away more with un-miced gigs than some other series. The 9 ply shells really project.

Again just been busy lately. My friends from Germany were visiting me in the USA!! Plus had a Florida trip. Anyway will likely be getting the matching snare sometime after my SQ2 shows up.
