OK so wood tips...love them on cymbals but they don't last. Nylon, too harsh on cymbals but they are pretty much bulletproof.
So the trick is to get nylon to sound like wood.
Yesterday I was experimenting with a lighter, a screwdriver, and some sandpaper. I would heat up the screwdriver tip with the lighter, and after it was nice and hot, I pressed it into my acorn shaped nylon tip, deliberately trying to make depressions, to alter the surface, because I thought it might make it mellower on a ride cymbal. Of course the melted displaced nylon accumulated on the ridges of the depression, so I sanded them down with the sandpaper, or scraped it off with a knife, so I ended up with just depressions. I made about 5 total, all around the tip, in line with the stick but not perfectly. It did mellow the cymbal response. It took a little trial and error. But I think it might work to get a nice response with a long life.
I like round nylon tips, they sound great on rides, but they dent drumheads quicker it seems. Acorns are better on drumheads (assuming a flat angle) but suck on rides IMO.
I tried the Regal Tip "E" Series. They have a ribbed tip. They are pretty nice too.
But melting some depressions and sanding the ridges smooth mellowed out the tone on the ride cymbal. I may go back to acorns now.

Little experiment I did
