Every time I'm in Sam Ash or any music store for that matter I feel ashamed to hit practice pads, because everyone always goes lightning quick and I always play slow and a turtle, using my wrists with german grip and hitting hard. What sucks even more is that I play in a metal band, so when I have to play blast beats I feel ashamed and play them super slow.
To make matters worse, my guitarist (who never played drums before) borrowed my practice pad for a bit and a few weeks later he started blast beating quicker than I could ever play, flying finger technique and all. Of course he had no groove, but still, kind of frustrating. I tried the flying finger technique and can't seem to get any rebound out of it, I just hit everything too hard and use my wrists without trying to.
If I was quicker I'd feel good about my drumming. That's all that's been holding me back. My feet are slow too, I play with double bass and use my entire legs to stomp on the pedals. I hit the bass drum louder than anything by far. I can't pass 16th notes on 150 bpm, while everyone else seems to warm up on like 180 bpm. Every time I practice with my ankles I flam everything and my shins start to kill me. No matter how much I practice it I can't get it.
Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. I'm extremely hard on myself.
