Hello All,
I've learned a lot during my lurking and appreciate the collective wisdom of this forum.
I'm hoping to get a new kit with a lower, somewhat darker tone. Thus far I have been comparing the Starclassic Performer B/B and Live Custom, but having spent too many hours on youtube, came across John Good's discussion of ply configuration and the effect of DW's various ply layups on enhancing the lower tone of maple drums.
My first question, among many, is whether I'll see some similarities in the lower fundamental tone of a collector's series or performer kit compared to the b/b or live customs, or if the ply configuration of the dw's can't make up for the denser nature of bubinga and oak?
Also, my local GC has the live custom/k cymbal deal for $1899, or a 2 year old 5 piece starclassic b/b (10, 12, 14, 16, 22) for $1599. The starclassic is technically new but was used for the drumoff 2 years ago and has been moved around quite a bit (great shape, but slightly shop worn). If the cymbals weren't included with the live custom, which would you choose?
Lastly, if you have any other ideas of drums that I might not have considered, please feel free to offer your suggestions.
Thanks for your help!
Jim
