Mapex Versatus/snare drum help

Okay, so I've been looking at snare drums for a while. I still am a little confused at what your looking for when buying one. I have a budget of about $500. Since pretty much my whole kit is from Mapex, (Mapex Saturn with Mapex Falcon Hardware and a Mapex Throne) I really wanted to buy a snare from mapex just cuz i think it'd be cool. Anyways, I've been staring at the Mapex Versatus for quite some time. I did plenty of research on it. funny enough, I really want to get one, but what holds me back is my lack of knowledge in snare drums, and the fact that this snare drum (Unlike the ones I know) is much smaller in depth! like, Holly cow!! I almost thought it was a piccolo snare for a second until I read it's diameter again and got really confused. You see, I really need a snare drum that can tune to both jazz, and rock. Now, when the point of this snare drum is to be "Versatile," so that it can tune to both high and low, Of course I want to buy it. So, I need some opinion here. First off with the kind of music that I play, what should I look for when buying a snare drum? Second off, do you think I should get the Versatus Snare? Lastly, Weather or not you think I should get the versatus snare drum, What are some really good snare drums around $500? I'd love to expand more on what I know on snare drums. (It'd be even greater if you also knew of some snare drums that were cheaper)
