Greetings drummerworld!
Zach here again, I was just wondering if any of y'all had any info about the seemingly immense recent popularity of cymbal stacks. 15 years ago they were a sort of curious novelty but they have seemingly become ubiquitous in that time.
The three main causes of this that I've been able to infer so far are thus: Mike Portnoy released his Max Stax Sabian signature models introducing the concept on the open market (I know paiste has also released stacks but i don't know who marketed them first). Then in 2003 Mars Volta released Deloused in the Comatormium catapulting Jon Theodore and his large pile of broken cymbals into the spotlight of modern drumming. Finally, during his 2006 MD fest performance, Aaron Spears' use of an extremely staccato stack highlighted his already awe inspiring performance exposing even larger audiences to the concept. In the time since these three events it seems as if the stack has become an important part of many modern drummers' arsenal of sounds.
So tell me guys, how did you figure out about stacking? How long have you been using it on gigs? Do you think stacks have reached the same popularity as other effects like splashes, bells, and chinas? Is my time line correct or am I missing something?
Lets Talk Stacks
