beginner learning new song, transcribe questions.

Hi guys Ive been playing drums for about 1 year. I only played the rudiments, exercises, coordination, techniques, reading. Just recently I decided to join a band to cover 3 songs. While learning the songs, I realized that I suck at hearing the fills. It took me alot of time to figure out how to do some fills. Then I decided to transcribe the music. It still took a lot of time but it helped me figure out correct way to play the song. And now I am more accurate and it save me some time instead of listening to a song over and over and over.

I enjoyed transcribing drum music. I am thinking, when I have alot of songs transcribed, I can still play them after years or decades just by readiing my sheets.

BUT is this bad habbit? that I need to use my visual and reading skills for drums? Will this make me sound mechanical? Is it better to just learn everything by ear to improve my hearing perception, memory and feel? I mean I know some people who just listen to a song and play right away.. I heard buddy rich, bonham and other drummers who did not read/write music. What are you're thoughsts? Thanks in advance guys!
