1974 Tama Royalstar Snare Question

samedi 16 mai 2015

I bought a 5-piece Royalstar kit new in 1974. It came with a "Chrome" seamed snare, Model #7586. This thing sounds friggin' awesome. Nice and fat, over a wide range of tunings. I also have a 2013 7-piece Mapex Staturn Studioease I bought new, and for the past two years have been working on trying to dial-in the Mapex snare. Turns out the sweet spot on the maple and walnut Mapex snare produces a crisp, snappy, bright, cutting sound, but I prefer a deep, fat sound.

I finally gave up on the Mapex, and took the Tama out of its 2-year retirement yesterday to get it cleaned up and ready for prime time. I can't believe it's shallower than my Mapex snare, but sounds SO much deeper. I re-installed the original 20-strand snare over an Ambassador "Snare" head I put on the bottom in 1980, and reinstalled the coated Weatherking I had put on it in 2012, and this thing sounds FAT, FAT, FAT! Too bad the chrome is pitted from a few years of salt-air Hawaii cruises! GRRRR! I can't believe this happened, as this snare is only 41 years old! ;-)

Anyway, when I had it apart, I noticed that the inside is finished differently than the outside chrome. It appears that it is just "polished" to a smooth, matte finish. In some spots I see a copper color showing through. Does anyone know what this shell is made of? I'd really like to know because this will be the snare I will use for the rest of my life, because as far as I am concerned, no other snare suits my taste, and I've played different Pearls, Ludwigs, Sonors, etc.

The only thing the Tama catalog says is that it is a "Chrome" snare. I know that brass, steel, and aluminum are used for making snares but I find it hard to believe this is a copper shell, as copper is a really soft metal. Back in the day, this snare saw some mileage, and was even loaded on planes without any cases! I would think if it was made of copper it would would have been dented and bent over all these years.

Any info would be appreciated.
