DW bass drum muffling pillows
Recently, I realized my 22x18 DW performance kick sounded flat, dull and lifeless. The toms and snare got a lot of attention in the last year, 2 head replacements and regular re-tuning, but I always figured the kick sound was "that DW kick sound" and I should get used to it.
Yesterday, I finally took the time to settle the matter.
After a couple of tests, I left the factory-installed reso-side pillow velcroed to the bottom without it touching the head at all to act as an overtone magnet, and turned the batter side pillow so only its "tip" would barely touch the head.

I tuned the batter well over JAW and the reso a half-turn more.
To my taste and in the environment in which I played yesterday, it was a game changer : I finally got a rich and full sound out of that kick.
Feathering it produced a nice manly whisper, playing it fully-open gave me tone and at last left me in charge of managing volume and resonance.
Of course I don't play double kick anymore, and a blastbeat might have been harder to control.
So instead of a dull unidimensional kick, I now have a great drum which needs a bit of control but has so much to give in return. That kick is a well-crafted instrument, and trust me I am no DW worshipper, far from it. In fact I came close to replacing the kit a couple of times in the last year by another manufacturer's set, but now [gear lust notwithstanding] I am set on keeping it.
It is all a question of taste, but if I can help someone else who is in the dark and like me did not give that kick enough love, I think it is worth it !

Making switch from Clear Emps to Clear Ambs: what to expect?
Hey guys,
In my return to drumming a few years ago, I bought a Tama Silverstar (birch) set and went with my old faithful of Clear Emperors over Clear Ambassadors on the bottom and keep doing so.
Time to buy new batter heads so on a whim, I ordered Ambassadors instead of Emperors. You guys are much more knowledgeable than I but I felt like my drums could "sing" more possibly with a one-ply and that possibly the 2 ply was too "dark". I play 90's alternative and some classic rock mostly and would prefer NOT to use any extra muffling on any drums (aside from using a P3 for my snare batter and for my kick batter.)
I'm not a hard-hitter so I don't feel like I'll be denting the Ambs because I never did that with Emps. Just looking for a "brighter" sound out of my toms (especially playing live usually with no mics or occasionally one overhead.)
Did I make a good choice?

Anyone around here using an older Ipad 2 or something similar for performance and teaching? I'm looking for something to hold charts and exercise sheets and for playback of tracks, etc.

Hi everyone. The title of this thread kind of says it all. I would really appreciate some thoughts on the difference between the coated Power Stroke 3 and 4 14 inch drum head. I have recently started using Power Stroke 4 coated on a Mapex Black Panther snare and i just love it, fore it takes away just enough of the decay of the snare. I am interested to know how will the Power Stroke 3 14 inch head behave, because i have noticed it also have the ring at the bottum of the head. Also i have played a Even gb2 22 inch kick clear drum head for quite some time and i have also very much enjoy it and now it is difficult to get hold of that same head through my supplyer, so i am thinking of either getting the gb3 or gb4 clear kick drum head.

So how do you? Do I write drum parts and count the measures of each part of the song while I'm playing? Do I feel the measures? Do I just listen to the guitar and bass track, and memorize where everything goes?

So I got to thinking about this, and for me...I think I spend more mental and physical energy getting the right sound from my kit than I spend on maintaining the time. The reason being is I have to stifle my volume a lot for the rooms I play, yet I still have to burn.
Anyway, this got to thinking of all the different things that go into playing good drums. I was hoping I could get some help compiling a list of the major bullet points. And minor too, what the hell.
After we have a list, it would be fun to ask people to put the list in order of importance...according to them, for their particular playing requirements.
Here's a few starter items to illustrate what I'm going for.

B. Keeping the meter clock steady

It is a one stop shop that seems to know other competitors cymbals well enough to find the sound in their own inventory. If you have issues, you're able to send it back for adjustments. AND they just added a lifetime warranty on cracks 1/2" or smaller.

Changing tom heads
In days past, whenever I busted a tom head or one just went dead on me, I'd change all the tom heads instead of just the bum one. Well it happened again the other day. The upper ply on one of my hydraulics sprung a tiny little tear. Normally I'd just change all 4 heads (they're all about 5 years old) but I'm being more budget conscious and thinking of replacing just the broken one. What do you guys/gals do? Change just the one, or all of them? Would one new head not mesh well sound wise with older broken-in heads? What do you think?

Quick and dirty band recording!
Had rehearsal tonight and I wanted to post a mixed-down .mp3 file of one of the songs we put together tonight.
The band is a standard 4-piece, with two guitars, bass, and drums, and all four of us handle singing duties. In this case, one of the guitarists is singing.
But this was actually a test of my new recording gear to see how I could do quick & dirty recordings, and I'm happy to say I can. With my particular 8-channel USB interface (Focusrite Scarlett 18i20), what I did was take all the mics to my interface first, then software-wise, I can assign what goes directly out of each DIRECT OUT on the back of the box (it's like a THRU box, so whatever comes in on a certain track will be sent back out the Direct Outs). So all the mics hit my recording rig first, before going on to the band's PA. So the first four channels were vocals, those signals went through to the mixer. The other four channels I had a mic each on the guitars, bass, and one overhead on the drums, but those signals just go to the computer for recording.
On the recording supplied here, it doesn't sound half-bad. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Of course, EQ, reverb, ambience were added later when I was able to mix it down. I could've used a bass drum mic, but when the band is going, you don't miss the bass drum at all. This was recorded live in GarageBand using Apple's Yosemite OS. This couldn't have been easier!
I could mic my kit up into it's own mixer and send all those out to a mono send to my one-channel available on the interface, and I might do that next time. But i say if you're on the fence about computer recording (like i used to be), I think I'm showing here how easy it is to make a decent recording of a live band. I like it. Anyone use the jojo mayer sigs?
I love these sticks! Recently, I went on a hunt to try and find a similar stick but with a little more length, with no luck.. But interesting enough, what I did find was that the fulcrum on a average 16" stick, was no different from the fulcrum with the jojo's. The reach was about the same for me! I guess the jojo's have a different balance point that allow you to choke up on the butt end of the stick, moreso than other sticks.
Anyone else play these sticks?

Changing tom heads
In days past, whenever I busted a tom head or one just went dead on me, I'd change all the tom heads instead of just the bum one. Well it happened again the other day. The upper ply on one of my hydraulics sprung a tiny little tear. Normally I'd just change all 4 heads (they're all about 5 years old) but I'm being more budget conscious and thinking of replacing just the broken one. What do you guys/gals do? Change just the one, or all of them? Would one new head not mesh well sound wise with older broken-in heads? What do you think?

Buying a Jazz Kit. Help Me.
Sorry in advance for the long post. I’m looking to get a new kit for jazz, I’ve recently saved up some extra cash and I’d like to invest in a kit that a bit more in line with my current path in music. Jazz is a very ambiguous term considering how much music in encompasses, so I’m not sure how to describe exactly what I’m going for. Two drummers who I’m wildly into right now are Brian Blade with Chick Corea, and Eric McPherson with Fred Hersch. I should mention that I’m not trying to find a set that gets their sound I just dig that type of music…Okay that’s a lie I’d be fine with getting their sound hahaha, but let’s be honest that’s more their skill and less their kit. My point still stands, this is just an attempt to point you at the type of music I’m diggin. Besides cymbals I’ve never given much thought to drumming hardware. I’ve only recently started trying to read up on hardware, and since it’s such a large body of knowledge I’d like to ask some of you who have spent more time immersing yourselves in it for your opinions. I don’t like to make quick decisions with cash and I love seeing others points of view, so I’ll just lay out my mindset and you guys tell me what you’re thinking. I’m currently leaning heavily towards a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit. Here’s what I like and what I don’t about it.
PROS:
1. The sizes are great for jazz: 14x18 BD 8x12 RT 14x14 FT 5x14 Sn.
My current set is 18x20 BD 10x12 RT 14x14 FT 5.5x14 Snare. Overall not huge changes except for the bass. I’m thinking a smaller bass drum would be better for the sound I’m looking for, and I’m worried that the 16” bass drum on some of the other kits I’ve been looking at might be too much change for now? Another benefit of smaller kit means lighter gig huals, and who doesn’t like that?!
2. Cost + Availability: The set is cheap compared to its reported quality. I am patient enough to wait for a good deal on a used set. And if I’m looking to buy a used set then the closer to mass produced the set is, the more opportunities to actually FIND a used set/good deal.
3. Its references: I’ve heard almost nothing but good things about this kit. This includes reviews, a few drummers I’ve spoken with, and some of this forums threads that I’ve been reading.
CONS:
1. The stock snare is sub-optimal: The feel that you could say this about 90% of stock snares but I wanted to mention it. (Honestly at some point I’m planning on finding a snare that I’d use with any shell pack I’d use. But that is a problem for another day).
2. Tom mount sucks: I’ve read that it the idea for the hardware for the tom mount is pretty bad, I’ve heard it digs into the drum and chokes the sound of the tom. My plan for this is either to mod the existing hardware to prevent this, or possibly buy a new RT mount (while keeping the old mount if I end up selling the kit at a later point).
3. There are 5 tuning lugs on RT, and 6 on FT: Honestly I’m still not sure if this is a real problem or if it falls into a similar category as the “virgin bass/suspended toms” arguments I’ve only recently started reading about now that I’ve begun browsing drum hardware forums.
4. Bass drum riser digs into shell: I can just put something in between the shell and the riser clamp to protect the shell.
I’ve looked a little bit into other sets but when the CCJ showed the most promise I did the most research on it. It seems that for its price range the CCJ is near the best you can get (for jazz). I’d be happy with looking into a more expensive kit if the price increase is translating to performance quality, from what I’ve seen, after a certain price point the cash is going more into prestige or visuals than actual quality.
I should also note that I plan on going to some stores and testing out this and any other kits I’m interested in. But since it’s a bit of a drive to the nearest large music store I’d like to get as many ducks in a row as possible before that.

Some down time...
...and much needed. Sorry for my rant yesterday twisting off about everything under the shining sun.
After making the decision to stop all public drumming, save for maybe helping out a buddy with an emergency gig sub if needed, the wife noticed a change in my attitude. For the better. She agreed I was letting miscellaneous people and crap get to me and it was a good decision to back away from it all for a while.
So, I now have a moderate list of "honey-do's" to do around the house! Haha!
It's okay with me, I need to do them and something I've put off doing.
We both came to the agreement I STILL need to practice and keep up the chops, but just not with any band for the time being. Which leads to an interesting question she asked me. She asked if there was anything in particular I was going to work on drumming-wise or wanted to work on: technique, metronome work, learning particular grooves, etc. After hanging around with musicians all her life and having a daughter that is a professional clarinetist, and now married to me - a drummer/percussionist for 4 years - she's absorbed a lot of this stuff.
I mentioned my paradiddles and single-stroke roll need work.
But...I would really like to work on and learn some covers or grooves to add to my knowledge base, rock or blues covers or particular grooves.
I've decided to work on Zep's "Rock and Roll" and the Ventures' "Wipeout", since I never played in a band that covered these.
So let me ask the forum: along the classic rock and blues genres, or jazz, what particular covers have you found popular but challenging to play? Or needed to put in the extra time on? I know this is a general question, but maybe a few to get me started.

I have just bought "A Funky Primer" by Charles Dowd and "Stick Control" by Lawrence Stone as ebooks on Google Play.....
My hard copy of Stick Control is getting tattered and its falling apart.
The eBook copies are really cheap.....much cheaper than the hard copies.
Anyways, I was wondering if any of you out there use instructional books as ebooks?
I am just wondering how easy it will be to read drum notation with my tablet propped up on a music stand!!!
I could use a laptop I guess.....

Curious observation FWIW
The backstory:
It's really hard to find a 16" legged floor tom for my PDP CX series drums. When they show up, they go for over 300 bucks, because they are scarce. So I bought a cheap PDP 16" legged floor tom in the X7 series I think it was. 89 bucks delivered for a complete brand new drum. The catch? It was made from poplar.
My plans were to re-wrap in WMP it to match my CX kit. The 89 dollar drum is a lacquered drum. And I can make any drum sound good, I'm like the Wizard of Odd.
Now I'm not so sure. When I got it, I headed it, tuned it and played it. I didn't really like it TBH. It seemed like it lacked warmth and that general tone I like. It had/has this high mid fundamental... something I'm not after in a 16" floor tom. It really never sounded like any 16" floor tom I heard before, how is this possible? Edges were fine. I removed all the gaskets, brush lacquered the insides, and got Pearl ISO feet. I put S hoops on it too. That improved it a lot, but still, that high mid fundamental was ruining my high. I wrapped it anyway and used it.
So I played this poplar floor tom for probably close to a year now, and it was just OK. Some nights it sounded OK to me and other nights, no.
Last week I saw a lacquered concept maple PDP shell, bare, for 15 bucks. So I snagged it. (plus 35 shipping though, doh!)
Last night I stripped the poplar drum of hardware, peeled off the wrap, and transferred everything to the maple shell. Luckily all the holes matched perfectly.
I just got done lubing and heading and tuning it and holy crap on a cracker, what a difference the maple shell made. Now the drum has a totally warm sustaining long note, much longer than the poplar drum. And tons more satisfying.
It's the same shell, same ply layup, same dimensions, just different wood.
So some drums just sound better than others.
Now my Sonor Player's kit is made from all poplar too and I LOVE the tone of those drums. Nice and warm. Go figure. PDP's design just doesn't bring the best from poplar IMO. Boy does it work on maple though. I suspect the Sonors have a more rounded edge to bring out the bottom end of the poplar. That's a theory, I have to compare bearing edge profiles, and I don't have the time for that now.
So just a curious observation. I can usually improve the sound of a drum, but in the end, you can only do so much.
I remember a set of Pearl Exports that try as I might, I just couldn't get to sound good. (They were in a rehearsal space)
So I can't make every drum sound the way I like them.
People talk about how great the CX drums are, and I like them a lot, but the concept maple AFAICT, is the same shell. The CX's are older and are further along in the lignin hardening process, but the concept maple shells are beauties when it comes to sound.
Just some obs.

Playing both hands in perfect unison
Hey,
Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to practice getting both hands to play perfect in unison on a snare drum so that there is no flaming?
I seen Gavin Harrison cover it very briefly in an interview but he didn't go in to detail.
Iv'e searched on line and looked on here but it doesn't seem to be covered. Any advice at all is appreciated.

Sabian Limited Steampunk Ride
Been looking for one for a while. Got it for $300 in SLC this weekend. Was discounted due to some of the paint "flaking" around the bell. Otherwise I would rate it as very good with no smudges, scuffs, key holing, or dings.
Love the sound. I have a AA Rock ride and a Custom Shop HH Rock ride as well, all 22". The HH is slightly lower pitch with more overtones than the AA. The Paragon is higher pitched with less overtones. Has a very prominent and powerful ping. If I had to describe it I would say the overtones (frequency wise) are more tightly packed with the ping giving it more punch. The bell sounds great too.
Serious question, is it sacrilege to gig with one of these? It was a good deal $$ wise and I take very good care of my gigging equipment.

Where to find cheap, unwanted, garbage cymbals...
Yes, that's correct. I'm looking for a pair of hi-hats and a crash or ride that are as cheap (inexpensive) and undesirable as possible. I've made a silent practice kit with an old Royce set I got for free. I put Remo silentstroke heads on it but now I want some beater cymbals to put mutes on and leave there for quiet practicing. Problem is, I can't seem to get my hands on any without paying what I think is too much for them.
I just know there have to be literally hundreds, if not thousands of B8s or ZBTs or cymbals with "drum brand names" on them (even worse) in my area that people don't want or use. I just want something that better simulates cymbal rebound and I don't want to use any of my nice cymbals for this as I don't want to swap them out constantly. CL doesn't really have many of these crap cymbals in my area, surprisingly. Tried goodwill online too with little luck.
Anyone have any ideas?

Got that text last night....
The band has broken up due to scheduling conflicts. I'm part of the problem I guess. Between early work hours, and baseball schedules, I can't rehearse on weeknights, our bass player has a similar schedule, our rhythm guitarist works until 7pm most nights, and our lead guitarist refuses to rehearse on weekends.
Our bandleader (rhythm guitarist) just got fed up with it and called it quits. I'll miss the guys. It was fun while it lasted. Time to search all over again...

DW performance series 12x14 floor tom
So I'm thinking about getting a used performance series kit. Great price, but it was wondering if anyone had any experience with the 12x14 floor Tom I'm skeptical so seeing what you guys think. I would rather have a 16 inch and I would hate to have to go buy one after the fact because it really wouldn't be in my budget. Tell me what you think guys!

I am very close to buying one of these after having tried it briefly at my local store and being very impressed, however i'd love to hear some real world opinions on it from working drummers.
Most of my work is in small pubs and clubs so the bassist cab is usually very close by, I normally mic just inside a 5" port hole with a mic stand, My usual drum size is 20x14.
Is it very necessary to get the kelly shu mount ?
Any criticisms of it ?
How do you transport it ?

Any method for fast memorizing long and complex phrases
I wonder if there is any method/technique for fast picking up long n complex phrases by ear ?
for example the long syncopated phrase in Spain by Chick Corea.
I tried to pick it up by reading it but… no way it is going to take me weeks before i will get it up to speed and start feeling it in the right way.
Verbalizing it helps me to pick it up much faster then reading it out of a chart.
Any tips to share on this ?

Toms mounted on cymbal stands
Hi everyone. I have recently started mounting my toms on cymbal stands, but have noticed that my batter heads of the toms hanging from the stands respond to a cymbal being hit on the same stand. Have anyone experienced the same and if so, isn't this a big issue in studio? Any advice on how to deal with it?

Not sure what to do
I'm in the process of converting my cymbals over from Sabian to Meinl but recently came across a nice 20" vault crash. It is a great mainstream crash but like I said, I'm switching to meinl and while it does sound very good it's not the sound I'm looking for going on my kit (too much sustain and gloss). I'd usually sell it to fund my collection but I'm having trouble letting go of this cymbal, even though it doesn't fit with the more specific cymbals on the rest of my kit. It would be nice if I decided to remake a pop/rock/radio kit though. Ah decisions!

Taking a break....
It's been posted on here a number of times, about how folks take a break and work thru whatever caused them to put the sticks down in the first place. But I never dreamed I would want to take that kind of extended break. Until now.
To be blunt, the music scene in D/FW is downright sh*tty now. Very few clubs support and nurture live music and the ones that do, the word "cronyism" usually fits into the discussion somewhere. It's the same old bands playing the same old tunes all the time. Nothing fresh or new. And door covers are sky high now. For a new band, or a band that has been around long, getting into a new venue takes an act of congress. Booking agents around here suck. There are no individual booking agents anymore. It's all companies controlling what band gets to play where. And a lot of these "agents" never return emails or phone calls.
And going to jams? Laughable. It's always the same individuals or bands controlling who gets to play how long. If you are a relatively unknown musician in these jams, expect to wait long before you get to play. The reason is they want to run thru the same old crew they know before anyone else gets to play. And then it's always with some suspicion. Heaven forbid if someone plays a wrong note or doesn't know a song well!
Even the church scene playing in praise and worship has it's ups and downs and major frustrations. Not sure what they are teaching kids in seminary now, but it sure doesn't involve the words "humble" and "servant". It's all about "ME and look what I can do!" I'm really surprised some of these "worship leaders" can even fit their massive egos inside a sanctuary. I'm not saying all worship leaders are this way, just the ones I've had the misfortune of running into lately. My wife and I just left a church in Arlington because of this.
The last band I was in last year, we all worked hard to get 4 hours of material down, but when it came time to jam, every excuse known to man was hurled as to why they weren't ready. And this was after we all took a vote that we WERE ready to gig. It's frustrating.
After a few bad experiences lately, I'm taking a break. Not from practicing, but from actively pursuing playing in any kind of band for the time being. It's not worth the bulls*it and frustrations. Mind you I still foam at the mouth at the site of a great-looking kit or of hearing a really good groove or drum solo. I'm just not planning on being in a band any time soon.
I need the break to readjust....

Small dents in new cymbal
Hello folks! I really need your honest opinion on this matter.
So i recently purchased a 20" Sabian HHX Legacy O-Zone from a Webshop in the Netherlands (I'm from Denmark myself) and it arrived this morning. I got it really cheap even though the condition of the cymbal was 'new'. I quickly discovered though that the cymbal has two small dents in it (fleabites?) and I'm considering whether I should return it or not. I do not think that the dents affect the sound of the cymbal but they will without a doubt influence the price of the cymbal negatively if I would want to sell it one day. I am also afraid that the dents will become bigger with time.
What do you think I should do?

12" Tom
I recently tuned up a set of gretsch renowns for the church I drum for. The drums sounded great, but when I put the 12" tom on the stand, it became extremely dead (it had sounded dead with the previous heads,as well). I then tried turning the L-arm down (it had been facing up), as i've tried this before with other sets to increase resonance, but it remained dead.
Does anyone have any other recommendations, other then mounting it on a snare stand? I know that renown's are supposed to be decent drums, and it seems weird that this drum responds this way (the 10" doesn't have this problem).

Bass drum technique
I'm getting these annoying unwanted extra hits playing the bass drum, especially in slower tempos and simpler patterns, even when doing quarter notes but I also occurs in busier patterns. It sounds like when you let your stick drop on the snare drum, it bounces a little and then rests on the head. I'm not sure if it's my technique, the bass drum head, or the pedal. On other kits with worse pedals but brand new heads,this has never happened to me. Right now I'm using a DW 5000 Pedal on a stock pdp head that isn't even that tight, I play the flat foot technique. What could be the problem and how can I fix this?

Colleges for drum set players
I'm going to be off to college to study music soon, and Im going for a degree in performance. It took me a while to choose, but I've decided that I want to major in drum set performance instead of classical percussion (mallets, timpani etc..) I will not neglect CP, I'll always be working on my mallets, but I really do enjoy and I'm more comfortable in a drum set setting, I want to master that aspect of percussion more than anything else. My first choice is Berklee, it is my dream school, been dreaming of it since I was 14, especially because of the Jazz aspect ( I want to be as versatile as possible). what other good schools offer drum set though? Berklee is extremely expensive and I might have to choose another school if I don't have the money.

Reasonable Price for Used Mapex Armory
In general, what do you think a reasonable price is for a Mapex Armory 5-piece kit (snare, shells and tom mounting hardware)in transparent walnut in near mint condition that was purchased this year (2015)? It is basically the fusion/rock kit with a 20"x18" bass drum.
I cannot find any completed sales on EBay to use as a guide.

Frankie Dunlop: I said something to Mingus about a tempo one time when I was playing with him. He looked at me in the middle of a tune and said, "Hey, Frankie. Keep playing. I got to go over here and talk to Joe." Joe was the fellow who owned the Half Note.
The tempo was way upstairs and I wasn't adjusted to playing that fast anyhow. I'd just gotten into New York.
Now, Don Friedman was on piano. It was just me and him. No bass.
Now, it would've been bad enough for me with the bass. Jimmy Knepper and Booker Ervin were in the band too.
Mingus finally comes back on the bandstand, picks his bass up and starts playing. Same tune. He turns to me and says, "Hey, man. Hey, Frankie. The tempos gone down, man. That not the tempo I started."
And I guess it had gone down. I was scuffling. That man was a perfectionist. He didn't tell me that because he disliked me. If he disliked me, if he didn't think I could've made the gig, he wouldn't have hired me. But Mingus was such a perfectionist that the things the average musician or bandleader would say, "The hell with it," he wouldn't let it slide.
All of the geniuses are like that. They may be eccentric, but deep down inside they're concerned about their music. Monk, Rollins, Miles Davis, Mingus. They didn't want any substitutions, anything second-hand, for what it was really supposed to be.
And I'm glad that I came up under that, under the guiding lights of those cats.

Need advice as im not into I'll waste money on loads of different heads when loads of pepes have already got the experience.
I cant get the 'sound' im looking for from my Superstar toms. This is a circa 2005 superstar with the lacquer finish not the wrapped shells fitted with the diecast hoops & coated emperor heads.
Im after that open/ringy/full depth of sound which i cant seem to create whatever tuning range i try with the REMO coated emperor's fitted.
What experience / suggestions have you got with similar kits/tom sizes ?

I think it'd be a great offering from LUDWIG, limited run of 500, they would sell for a myriad of reasons.
I know some are going to say "Why not 6", or 5.75", but if we know anything for sure about LUDWIG, its that they're conservative along those lines.
Other companies have 5.5" SUPRA'likes and those drums are popular. The 5.5" deep metal snare drum design has proven attributes, and IMO a 5.5" LUDALLOY shell would be wanted.

A number of venues my band plays regularly don't have a drum wedge which makes hearing the rest of the band difficult. I finally decided to put together a cheap in ear setup, I have very little experience and knowledge regarding live sound, am I missing anything or going to run into issues that I'm not expecting??
I got a Harbinger L502 5 channel mixer and a pair of Shure SE215s and I'm going to get a headphone amp before I use this setup at a show, I've been testing it out at practice and so far it's worked great.
At practice we only mic the vocals but I've been putting mics on my drums, guitar and the bass and running a monitor feed to my mixer. Having my drums in channel 1 and the rest of the band in channel 2 gives me a little control over my mix but I doubt I'll be able to run it that way at a gig, I'll most likely get drums, guitar, bass, and vocals all in one channel but as long as I can hear I'm fine!
At a show I plan on running a cable from either the snake or the floor wedge into my mixer, if I have to only wear one earbud that'll be fine I just want to be able to hear something.
