DW bass drum muffling pillows

Recently, I realized my 22x18 DW performance kick sounded flat, dull and lifeless. The toms and snare got a lot of attention in the last year, 2 head replacements and regular re-tuning, but I always figured the kick sound was "that DW kick sound" and I should get used to it.

Yesterday, I finally took the time to settle the matter.

After a couple of tests, I left the factory-installed reso-side pillow velcroed to the bottom without it touching the head at all to act as an overtone magnet, and turned the batter side pillow so only its "tip" would barely touch the head.

Here is a link for a description : http://ift.tt/1MpECeo

I tuned the batter well over JAW and the reso a half-turn more.

To my taste and in the environment in which I played yesterday, it was a game changer : I finally got a rich and full sound out of that kick.

Feathering it produced a nice manly whisper, playing it fully-open gave me tone and at last left me in charge of managing volume and resonance.

Of course I don't play double kick anymore, and a blastbeat might have been harder to control.

So instead of a dull unidimensional kick, I now have a great drum which needs a bit of control but has so much to give in return. That kick is a well-crafted instrument, and trust me I am no DW worshipper, far from it. In fact I came close to replacing the kit a couple of times in the last year by another manufacturer's set, but now [gear lust notwithstanding] I am set on keeping it.

It is all a question of taste, but if I can help someone else who is in the dark and like me did not give that kick enough love, I think it is worth it !

Fellow drummers!

I had a great show on Sunday, and I just had to share it. I was playing with a new artist named Justin Baron for KTUphoria 2015.

We shared the stage with Ricky Martin, Kelly Clarkson, Shaggy and more.

This is a short video of the show

Making switch from Clear Emps to Clear Ambs: what to expect?

Hey guys,

In my return to drumming a few years ago, I bought a Tama Silverstar (birch) set and went with my old faithful of Clear Emperors over Clear Ambassadors on the bottom and keep doing so.

Time to buy new batter heads so on a whim, I ordered Ambassadors instead of Emperors. You guys are much more knowledgeable than I but I felt like my drums could "sing" more possibly with a one-ply and that possibly the 2 ply was too "dark". I play 90's alternative and some classic rock mostly and would prefer NOT to use any extra muffling on any drums (aside from using a P3 for my snare batter and for my kick batter.)

I'm not a hard-hitter so I don't feel like I'll be denting the Ambs because I never did that with Emps. Just looking for a "brighter" sound out of my toms (especially playing live usually with no mics or occasionally one overhead.)

Did I make a good choice?

Using older Ipad for Performance and Teaching

Anyone around here using an older Ipad 2 or something similar for performance and teaching? I'm looking for something to hold charts and exercise sheets and for playback of tracks, etc.

Has anyone experienced any problems with the older version not behaving well with newer software versions?

Any other info/comments from those already using any Ipad or tablet for similar stuff would be welcome as well.

Please help ID this "Constantinople" cymbal

Hello guys!

I found this cymbal online for sale and was curious what brand/type it is. It's a pair of hi hats with only the stamp in the picture below.

I initially thought it might be an old Zildjian Constantinople, but I couldn't find a match on the stamp on Google Images, so I'm not so sure about that.

Here's the stamp:

Tea Cup or Mug

Truth is, I'm a coffee person not a tea person, so I guess that means I'll get a mug.

But are new mugs as good as old mugs? Warmth is important, but then again so is flavour.

How important is the profile of the mug?

Can I turn a left handed mug around and use it right handed?

I've heard of a boutique mug manufacturer in the frozen wastelands of England called Svengali or Swami or something similar - anybody know of them? Any good?

Compairing Power Stroke 3 and 4 14 inch heads and gb3 and gb4 22 inch Even kick drum heads

Hi everyone. The title of this thread kind of says it all. I would really appreciate some thoughts on the difference between the coated Power Stroke 3 and 4 14 inch drum head. I have recently started using Power Stroke 4 coated on a Mapex Black Panther snare and i just love it, fore it takes away just enough of the decay of the snare. I am interested to know how will the Power Stroke 3 14 inch head behave, because i have noticed it also have the ring at the bottum of the head. Also i have played a Even gb2 22 inch kick clear drum head for quite some time and i have also very much enjoy it and now it is difficult to get hold of that same head through my supplyer, so i am thinking of either getting the gb3 or gb4 clear kick drum head.

Recording drums parts for a song.

Hi, I have posted a thread similar to this, on how to record drums for a s song, but I would like to re post with better explanation.

So how do you? Do I write drum parts and count the measures of each part of the song while I'm playing? Do I feel the measures? Do I just listen to the guitar and bass track, and memorize where everything goes?

All the things that go into drumming

So my band leader is of the mind that a drummers first and foremost thing to do is to keep time as steady as humanly possible. The rest almost doesn't matter to him it would seem (but I know it does) He's like Father Time.

So I got to thinking about this, and for me...I think I spend more mental and physical energy getting the right sound from my kit than I spend on maintaining the time. The reason being is I have to stifle my volume a lot for the rooms I play, yet I still have to burn.

Anyway, this got to thinking of all the different things that go into playing good drums. I was hoping I could get some help compiling a list of the major bullet points. And minor too, what the hell.

After we have a list, it would be fun to ask people to put the list in order of importance...according to them, for their particular playing requirements.

Here's a few starter items to illustrate what I'm going for.

A. Physically making.... and keeping in balance....the individual sounds of the kit, to make a cohesive net tone.

B. Keeping the meter clock steady

C. Having a sense for the right tempo. (good meter at the wrong tempo misses the mark)

D. Playing whatever style of song you are doing as authentically as possible.

Little help?

Saluda Cymbals 2015 Reviews/Comments

This is my first thread here on the site, so hello!

This is in regards to a lesser known cymbal company whose product is, in my opinion, very much a top of the line cymbal.

I found Saluda on facebook through Bill Bachman (fellow percussionist), who liked their page. After seeing a sale they had going on, I decided to check them out. After weeks of research (most recent info was in 2013), on the threads on all different drum groups, I couldn't find many negatives to the company. So I took a leap of faith and ordered two Nemesis crash cymbals. I spoke with Jamie and requested that the cymbals have an initial crash that cut like an A Medium-Thin crash with the dark, full warmth of the K Dark Customs. After impatiently waiting 2 weeks, I received my cymbals just before a private lesson I was giving. My student and I were blown away by the beauty alone. We got them put on my kit, and I heard two Zildjian sounds out of both of my new toys.

Folks, controversy in the past can be laid to rest. These guys are legit. The cymbals sound amazing. It's not a matter of opinion... because they will custom make the cymbal of your dreams. It is a one stop shop that seems to know other competitors cymbals well enough to find the sound in their own inventory. If you have issues, you're able to send it back for adjustments. AND they just added a lifetime warranty on cracks 1/2" or smaller.

Give them a call and let them know Dustin McLain sent you that way. Email tends to take a while for responses. Phone # is (803) 446-8000

The only way to know if you like them, is to take that leap of faith. They will not disappoint you with the service, look, or overall quality.

Changing tom heads

In days past, whenever I busted a tom head or one just went dead on me, I'd change all the tom heads instead of just the bum one. Well it happened again the other day. The upper ply on one of my hydraulics sprung a tiny little tear. Normally I'd just change all 4 heads (they're all about 5 years old) but I'm being more budget conscious and thinking of replacing just the broken one. What do you guys/gals do? Change just the one, or all of them? Would one new head not mesh well sound wise with older broken-in heads? What do you think?

For fans who buy the box set, a special gold-colored 7” vinyl single will be included, with the A side containing one of the band’s earliest recordings, “Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks),” and the B Side being the final song they ever played live, “Box of Rain” at Soldier Field on July 9, 1995.

For those fans on a budget, a four-CD version of the collection will be released as well, which will have a live song from each year, from 1965-1995.

Quick and dirty band recording!

Had rehearsal tonight and I wanted to post a mixed-down .mp3 file of one of the songs we put together tonight.

The band is a standard 4-piece, with two guitars, bass, and drums, and all four of us handle singing duties. In this case, one of the guitarists is singing.

But this was actually a test of my new recording gear to see how I could do quick & dirty recordings, and I'm happy to say I can. With my particular 8-channel USB interface (Focusrite Scarlett 18i20), what I did was take all the mics to my interface first, then software-wise, I can assign what goes directly out of each DIRECT OUT on the back of the box (it's like a THRU box, so whatever comes in on a certain track will be sent back out the Direct Outs). So all the mics hit my recording rig first, before going on to the band's PA. So the first four channels were vocals, those signals went through to the mixer. The other four channels I had a mic each on the guitars, bass, and one overhead on the drums, but those signals just go to the computer for recording.

On the recording supplied here, it doesn't sound half-bad. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Of course, EQ, reverb, ambience were added later when I was able to mix it down. I could've used a bass drum mic, but when the band is going, you don't miss the bass drum at all. This was recorded live in GarageBand using Apple's Yosemite OS. This couldn't have been easier!

I could mic my kit up into it's own mixer and send all those out to a mono send to my one-channel available on the interface, and I might do that next time. But i say if you're on the fence about computer recording (like i used to be), I think I'm showing here how easy it is to make a decent recording of a live band. I like it. Let me know what you think (do not critique the performers, this is mainly academic about recording in general ;)

Anyone use the jojo mayer sigs?

I love these sticks! Recently, I went on a hunt to try and find a similar stick but with a little more length, with no luck.. But interesting enough, what I did find was that the fulcrum on a average 16" stick, was no different from the fulcrum with the jojo's. The reach was about the same for me! I guess the jojo's have a different balance point that allow you to choke up on the butt end of the stick, moreso than other sticks.

Anyone else play these sticks?

Buying a Jazz Kit. Help Me.

Sorry in advance for the long post. I’m looking to get a new kit for jazz, I’ve recently saved up some extra cash and I’d like to invest in a kit that a bit more in line with my current path in music. Jazz is a very ambiguous term considering how much music in encompasses, so I’m not sure how to describe exactly what I’m going for. Two drummers who I’m wildly into right now are Brian Blade with Chick Corea, and Eric McPherson with Fred Hersch. I should mention that I’m not trying to find a set that gets their sound I just dig that type of music…Okay that’s a lie I’d be fine with getting their sound hahaha, but let’s be honest that’s more their skill and less their kit. My point still stands, this is just an attempt to point you at the type of music I’m diggin. Besides cymbals I’ve never given much thought to drumming hardware. I’ve only recently started trying to read up on hardware, and since it’s such a large body of knowledge I’d like to ask some of you who have spent more time immersing yourselves in it for your opinions. I don’t like to make quick decisions with cash and I love seeing others points of view, so I’ll just lay out my mindset and you guys tell me what you’re thinking. I’m currently leaning heavily towards a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit. Here’s what I like and what I don’t about it.

PROS:
1. The sizes are great for jazz: 14x18 BD 8x12 RT 14x14 FT 5x14 Sn.
My current set is 18x20 BD 10x12 RT 14x14 FT 5.5x14 Snare. Overall not huge changes except for the bass. I’m thinking a smaller bass drum would be better for the sound I’m looking for, and I’m worried that the 16” bass drum on some of the other kits I’ve been looking at might be too much change for now? Another benefit of smaller kit means lighter gig huals, and who doesn’t like that?!
2. Cost + Availability: The set is cheap compared to its reported quality. I am patient enough to wait for a good deal on a used set. And if I’m looking to buy a used set then the closer to mass produced the set is, the more opportunities to actually FIND a used set/good deal.
3. Its references: I’ve heard almost nothing but good things about this kit. This includes reviews, a few drummers I’ve spoken with, and some of this forums threads that I’ve been reading.

CONS:
1. The stock snare is sub-optimal: The feel that you could say this about 90% of stock snares but I wanted to mention it. (Honestly at some point I’m planning on finding a snare that I’d use with any shell pack I’d use. But that is a problem for another day).
2. Tom mount sucks: I’ve read that it the idea for the hardware for the tom mount is pretty bad, I’ve heard it digs into the drum and chokes the sound of the tom. My plan for this is either to mod the existing hardware to prevent this, or possibly buy a new RT mount (while keeping the old mount if I end up selling the kit at a later point).
3. There are 5 tuning lugs on RT, and 6 on FT: Honestly I’m still not sure if this is a real problem or if it falls into a similar category as the “virgin bass/suspended toms” arguments I’ve only recently started reading about now that I’ve begun browsing drum hardware forums.
4. Bass drum riser digs into shell: I can just put something in between the shell and the riser clamp to protect the shell.

I’ve looked a little bit into other sets but when the CCJ showed the most promise I did the most research on it. It seems that for its price range the CCJ is near the best you can get (for jazz). I’d be happy with looking into a more expensive kit if the price increase is translating to performance quality, from what I’ve seen, after a certain price point the cash is going more into prestige or visuals than actual quality.
I should also note that I plan on going to some stores and testing out this and any other kits I’m interested in. But since it’s a bit of a drive to the nearest large music store I’d like to get as many ducks in a row as possible before that.
Thank You.

Some down time...

...and much needed. Sorry for my rant yesterday twisting off about everything under the shining sun.

After making the decision to stop all public drumming, save for maybe helping out a buddy with an emergency gig sub if needed, the wife noticed a change in my attitude. For the better. She agreed I was letting miscellaneous people and crap get to me and it was a good decision to back away from it all for a while.

So, I now have a moderate list of "honey-do's" to do around the house! Haha!

It's okay with me, I need to do them and something I've put off doing.

We both came to the agreement I STILL need to practice and keep up the chops, but just not with any band for the time being. Which leads to an interesting question she asked me. She asked if there was anything in particular I was going to work on drumming-wise or wanted to work on: technique, metronome work, learning particular grooves, etc. After hanging around with musicians all her life and having a daughter that is a professional clarinetist, and now married to me - a drummer/percussionist for 4 years - she's absorbed a lot of this stuff.

I mentioned my paradiddles and single-stroke roll need work.

But...I would really like to work on and learn some covers or grooves to add to my knowledge base, rock or blues covers or particular grooves.

I've decided to work on Zep's "Rock and Roll" and the Ventures' "Wipeout", since I never played in a band that covered these.

So let me ask the forum: along the classic rock and blues genres, or jazz, what particular covers have you found popular but challenging to play? Or needed to put in the extra time on? I know this is a general question, but maybe a few to get me started.

Thanks!
Some down time...

Instructional books....hard copy or eBook??

Hi to you all...

I have just bought "A Funky Primer" by Charles Dowd and "Stick Control" by Lawrence Stone as ebooks on Google Play.....

My hard copy of Stick Control is getting tattered and its falling apart.

The eBook copies are really cheap.....much cheaper than the hard copies.

Anyways, I was wondering if any of you out there use instructional books as ebooks?

I am just wondering how easy it will be to read drum notation with my tablet propped up on a music stand!!!

I could use a laptop I guess.....

Curious observation FWIW

The backstory:

It's really hard to find a 16" legged floor tom for my PDP CX series drums. When they show up, they go for over 300 bucks, because they are scarce. So I bought a cheap PDP 16" legged floor tom in the X7 series I think it was. 89 bucks delivered for a complete brand new drum. The catch? It was made from poplar.

My plans were to re-wrap in WMP it to match my CX kit. The 89 dollar drum is a lacquered drum. And I can make any drum sound good, I'm like the Wizard of Odd.

Now I'm not so sure. When I got it, I headed it, tuned it and played it. I didn't really like it TBH. It seemed like it lacked warmth and that general tone I like. It had/has this high mid fundamental... something I'm not after in a 16" floor tom. It really never sounded like any 16" floor tom I heard before, how is this possible? Edges were fine. I removed all the gaskets, brush lacquered the insides, and got Pearl ISO feet. I put S hoops on it too. That improved it a lot, but still, that high mid fundamental was ruining my high. I wrapped it anyway and used it.

So I played this poplar floor tom for probably close to a year now, and it was just OK. Some nights it sounded OK to me and other nights, no.

Last week I saw a lacquered concept maple PDP shell, bare, for 15 bucks. So I snagged it. (plus 35 shipping though, doh!)

Last night I stripped the poplar drum of hardware, peeled off the wrap, and transferred everything to the maple shell. Luckily all the holes matched perfectly.

I just got done lubing and heading and tuning it and holy crap on a cracker, what a difference the maple shell made. Now the drum has a totally warm sustaining long note, much longer than the poplar drum. And tons more satisfying.

It's the same shell, same ply layup, same dimensions, just different wood.

So some drums just sound better than others.

Now my Sonor Player's kit is made from all poplar too and I LOVE the tone of those drums. Nice and warm. Go figure. PDP's design just doesn't bring the best from poplar IMO. Boy does it work on maple though. I suspect the Sonors have a more rounded edge to bring out the bottom end of the poplar. That's a theory, I have to compare bearing edge profiles, and I don't have the time for that now.

So just a curious observation. I can usually improve the sound of a drum, but in the end, you can only do so much.

I remember a set of Pearl Exports that try as I might, I just couldn't get to sound good. (They were in a rehearsal space)

So I can't make every drum sound the way I like them.

People talk about how great the CX drums are, and I like them a lot, but the concept maple AFAICT, is the same shell. The CX's are older and are further along in the lignin hardening process, but the concept maple shells are beauties when it comes to sound.

Just some obs.

That's it, carry on.
Curious observation FWIW

Playing both hands in perfect unison

Hey,

Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to practice getting both hands to play perfect in unison on a snare drum so that there is no flaming?

I seen Gavin Harrison cover it very briefly in an interview but he didn't go in to detail.

Iv'e searched on line and looked on here but it doesn't seem to be covered. Any advice at all is appreciated.

Cheers.

Sabian Limited Steampunk Ride

Been looking for one for a while. Got it for $300 in SLC this weekend. Was discounted due to some of the paint "flaking" around the bell. Otherwise I would rate it as very good with no smudges, scuffs, key holing, or dings.

Love the sound. I have a AA Rock ride and a Custom Shop HH Rock ride as well, all 22". The HH is slightly lower pitch with more overtones than the AA. The Paragon is higher pitched with less overtones. Has a very prominent and powerful ping. If I had to describe it I would say the overtones (frequency wise) are more tightly packed with the ping giving it more punch. The bell sounds great too.

Serious question, is it sacrilege to gig with one of these? It was a good deal $$ wise and I take very good care of my gigging equipment.

Where to find cheap, unwanted, garbage cymbals...

Yes, that's correct. I'm looking for a pair of hi-hats and a crash or ride that are as cheap (inexpensive) and undesirable as possible. I've made a silent practice kit with an old Royce set I got for free. I put Remo silentstroke heads on it but now I want some beater cymbals to put mutes on and leave there for quiet practicing. Problem is, I can't seem to get my hands on any without paying what I think is too much for them.

I just know there have to be literally hundreds, if not thousands of B8s or ZBTs or cymbals with "drum brand names" on them (even worse) in my area that people don't want or use. I just want something that better simulates cymbal rebound and I don't want to use any of my nice cymbals for this as I don't want to swap them out constantly. CL doesn't really have many of these crap cymbals in my area, surprisingly. Tried goodwill online too with little luck.

Anyone have any ideas?

I just know that somewhere, some parent is like, "can't someone just take these damn things off my hands for free?" I just need to find those people.

Double Bass Groove - A quick clip of what I am all about.

I have been posting on here a little bit about bass drum technique and pedal settings. Here are two quick videos incorporating what I have discussed.

In both videos I play the same pattern. One is on practice pads and shows my feet, the other is on the drum kit.

Got that text last night....

The band has broken up due to scheduling conflicts. I'm part of the problem I guess. Between early work hours, and baseball schedules, I can't rehearse on weeknights, our bass player has a similar schedule, our rhythm guitarist works until 7pm most nights, and our lead guitarist refuses to rehearse on weekends.

Our bandleader (rhythm guitarist) just got fed up with it and called it quits. I'll miss the guys. It was fun while it lasted. Time to search all over again...

DW performance series 12x14 floor tom

So I'm thinking about getting a used performance series kit. Great price, but it was wondering if anyone had any experience with the 12x14 floor Tom I'm skeptical so seeing what you guys think. I would rather have a 16 inch and I would hate to have to go buy one after the fact because it really wouldn't be in my budget. Tell me what you think guys!

Gigster BC2 throne ??

I am very close to buying one of these after having tried it briefly at my local store and being very impressed, however i'd love to hear some real world opinions on it from working drummers.
Most of my work is in small pubs and clubs so the bassist cab is usually very close by, I normally mic just inside a 5" port hole with a mic stand, My usual drum size is 20x14.
Is it very necessary to get the kelly shu mount ?
Any criticisms of it ?
How do you transport it ?
Any opinions greatly appreciated.

Any method for fast memorizing long and complex phrases

I wonder if there is any method/technique for fast picking up long n complex phrases by ear ?
for example the long syncopated phrase in Spain by Chick Corea.
I tried to pick it up by reading it but… no way it is going to take me weeks before i will get it up to speed and start feeling it in the right way.
Verbalizing it helps me to pick it up much faster then reading it out of a chart.
Any tips to share on this ?

Toms mounted on cymbal stands

Hi everyone. I have recently started mounting my toms on cymbal stands, but have noticed that my batter heads of the toms hanging from the stands respond to a cymbal being hit on the same stand. Have anyone experienced the same and if so, isn't this a big issue in studio? Any advice on how to deal with it?

Skepta – SHUTDOWN (Remix) Ft. Idris Elba

Skepta looks to add the success of his hit single “Shutdown” with an official remix.
Did you know Idris Elba could rap? I didn’t! The ridiculously talented and handsome UK actor has shown plenty of musical ambition in the past, but I had no idea he had bars. And yet he’s now jumped on a new remix of Skepta’s UK grime banger “Shutdown.” And his verse, which leads off the track, is honestly impressive. His rapping voice is a gnarled, strained thing, and he uses it nimbly.

Not sure what to do

I'm in the process of converting my cymbals over from Sabian to Meinl but recently came across a nice 20" vault crash. It is a great mainstream crash but like I said, I'm switching to meinl and while it does sound very good it's not the sound I'm looking for going on my kit (too much sustain and gloss). I'd usually sell it to fund my collection but I'm having trouble letting go of this cymbal, even though it doesn't fit with the more specific cymbals on the rest of my kit. It would be nice if I decided to remake a pop/rock/radio kit though. Ah decisions!

Taking a break....

It's been posted on here a number of times, about how folks take a break and work thru whatever caused them to put the sticks down in the first place. But I never dreamed I would want to take that kind of extended break. Until now.

To be blunt, the music scene in D/FW is downright sh*tty now. Very few clubs support and nurture live music and the ones that do, the word "cronyism" usually fits into the discussion somewhere. It's the same old bands playing the same old tunes all the time. Nothing fresh or new. And door covers are sky high now. For a new band, or a band that has been around long, getting into a new venue takes an act of congress. Booking agents around here suck. There are no individual booking agents anymore. It's all companies controlling what band gets to play where. And a lot of these "agents" never return emails or phone calls.

And going to jams? Laughable. It's always the same individuals or bands controlling who gets to play how long. If you are a relatively unknown musician in these jams, expect to wait long before you get to play. The reason is they want to run thru the same old crew they know before anyone else gets to play. And then it's always with some suspicion. Heaven forbid if someone plays a wrong note or doesn't know a song well!

Even the church scene playing in praise and worship has it's ups and downs and major frustrations. Not sure what they are teaching kids in seminary now, but it sure doesn't involve the words "humble" and "servant". It's all about "ME and look what I can do!" I'm really surprised some of these "worship leaders" can even fit their massive egos inside a sanctuary. I'm not saying all worship leaders are this way, just the ones I've had the misfortune of running into lately. My wife and I just left a church in Arlington because of this.

The last band I was in last year, we all worked hard to get 4 hours of material down, but when it came time to jam, every excuse known to man was hurled as to why they weren't ready. And this was after we all took a vote that we WERE ready to gig. It's frustrating.

After a few bad experiences lately, I'm taking a break. Not from practicing, but from actively pursuing playing in any kind of band for the time being. It's not worth the bulls*it and frustrations. Mind you I still foam at the mouth at the site of a great-looking kit or of hearing a really good groove or drum solo. I'm just not planning on being in a band any time soon.

I need the break to readjust....

Thanks for letting me rant.

Small dents in new cymbal

Hello folks! I really need your honest opinion on this matter.

So i recently purchased a 20" Sabian HHX Legacy O-Zone from a Webshop in the Netherlands (I'm from Denmark myself) and it arrived this morning. I got it really cheap even though the condition of the cymbal was 'new'. I quickly discovered though that the cymbal has two small dents in it (fleabites?) and I'm considering whether I should return it or not. I do not think that the dents affect the sound of the cymbal but they will without a doubt influence the price of the cymbal negatively if I would want to sell it one day. I am also afraid that the dents will become bigger with time.
What do you think I should do?

12" Tom

I recently tuned up a set of gretsch renowns for the church I drum for. The drums sounded great, but when I put the 12" tom on the stand, it became extremely dead (it had sounded dead with the previous heads,as well). I then tried turning the L-arm down (it had been facing up), as i've tried this before with other sets to increase resonance, but it remained dead.

Does anyone have any other recommendations, other then mounting it on a snare stand? I know that renown's are supposed to be decent drums, and it seems weird that this drum responds this way (the 10" doesn't have this problem).

Bass drum technique

I'm getting these annoying unwanted extra hits playing the bass drum, especially in slower tempos and simpler patterns, even when doing quarter notes but I also occurs in busier patterns. It sounds like when you let your stick drop on the snare drum, it bounces a little and then rests on the head. I'm not sure if it's my technique, the bass drum head, or the pedal. On other kits with worse pedals but brand new heads, this has never happened to me. Right now I'm using a DW 5000 Pedal on a stock pdp head that isn't even that tight, I play the flat foot technique. What could be the problem and how can I fix this?

Colleges for drum set players

I'm going to be off to college to study music soon, and Im going for a degree in performance. It took me a while to choose, but I've decided that I want to major in drum set performance instead of classical percussion (mallets, timpani etc..) I will not neglect CP, I'll always be working on my mallets, but I really do enjoy and I'm more comfortable in a drum set setting, I want to master that aspect of percussion more than anything else. My first choice is Berklee, it is my dream school, been dreaming of it since I was 14, especially because of the Jazz aspect ( I want to be as versatile as possible). what other good schools offer drum set though? Berklee is extremely expensive and I might have to choose another school if I don't have the money.

Reasonable Price for Used Mapex Armory

In general, what do you think a reasonable price is for a Mapex Armory 5-piece kit (snare, shells and tom mounting hardware)in transparent walnut in near mint condition that was purchased this year (2015)? It is basically the fusion/rock kit with a 20"x18" bass drum.

I cannot find any completed sales on EBay to use as a guide.

Thanks for the help.

Frankie Dunlop: All The Geniuses are Like That

SKF NOTE: The background on this Frankie Dunlop interview is posted here. Most of Frankie's published comments, rightly so, are about his work with Thelonious Monk. Here Frankie is sharing words of wisdom about Charles Mingus.

Frankie Dunlop: I said something to Mingus about a tempo one time when I was playing with him. He looked at me in the middle of a tune and said, "Hey, Frankie. Keep playing. I got to go over here and talk to Joe." Joe was the fellow who owned the Half Note.

The tempo was way upstairs and I wasn't adjusted to playing that fast anyhow. I'd just gotten into New York.

Now, Don Friedman was on piano. It was just me and him. No bass.

Now, it would've been bad enough for me with the bass. Jimmy Knepper and Booker Ervin were in the band too.

Mingus finally comes back on the bandstand, picks his bass up and starts playing. Same tune. He turns to me and says, "Hey, man. Hey, Frankie. The tempos gone down, man. That not the tempo I started."

And I guess it had gone down. I was scuffling. That man was a perfectionist. He didn't tell me that because he disliked me. If he disliked me, if he didn't think I could've made the gig, he wouldn't have hired me. But Mingus was such a perfectionist that the things the average musician or bandleader would say, "The hell with it," he wouldn't let it slide.

All of the geniuses are like that. They may be eccentric, but deep down inside they're concerned about their music. Monk, Rollins, Miles Davis, Mingus. They didn't want any substitutions, anything second-hand, for what it was really supposed to be.

And I'm glad that I came up under that, under the guiding lights of those cats.

Best Head Advice - Tama Superstars

Guys & Gals

Need advice as im not into I'll waste money on loads of different heads when loads of pepes have already got the experience.

I cant get the 'sound' im looking for from my Superstar toms. This is a circa 2005 superstar with the lacquer finish not the wrapped shells fitted with the diecast hoops & coated emperor heads.

Im after that open/ringy/full depth of sound which i cant seem to create whatever tuning range i try with the REMO coated emperor's fitted.

What experience / suggestions have you got with similar kits/tom sizes ?

LUDWIG 5.5" SUPRPAPHONIC...

Would you buy a LUDWIG 5.5" SUPRAPHONIC, or ACROLITE?

I think it'd be a great offering from LUDWIG, limited run of 500, they would sell for a myriad of reasons.

I know some are going to say "Why not 6", or 5.75", but if we know anything for sure about LUDWIG, its that they're conservative along those lines.

Other companies have 5.5" SUPRA'likes and those drums are popular. The 5.5" deep metal snare drum design has proven attributes, and IMO a 5.5" LUDALLOY shell would be wanted.

My BUDGET in ear setup

A number of venues my band plays regularly don't have a drum wedge which makes hearing the rest of the band difficult. I finally decided to put together a cheap in ear setup, I have very little experience and knowledge regarding live sound, am I missing anything or going to run into issues that I'm not expecting??

I got a Harbinger L502 5 channel mixer and a pair of Shure SE215s and I'm going to get a headphone amp before I use this setup at a show, I've been testing it out at practice and so far it's worked great.

At practice we only mic the vocals but I've been putting mics on my drums, guitar and the bass and running a monitor feed to my mixer. Having my drums in channel 1 and the rest of the band in channel 2 gives me a little control over my mix but I doubt I'll be able to run it that way at a gig, I'll most likely get drums, guitar, bass, and vocals all in one channel but as long as I can hear I'm fine!

At a show I plan on running a cable from either the snake or the floor wedge into my mixer, if I have to only wear one earbud that'll be fine I just want to be able to hear something.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The Rim Shock - Auxiliary Percussion for the Drum Kit

The Rim Shock - Auxiliary Percussion for the Drum Kit

Over my years of walking through the NAMM show, I always felt there was a niche that could be filled by products that really pushed the sonic boundary while still being practical and most importantly, musical. After many years of R&D of various ideas and help from some great people including some on here, the Rim Shock has been chosen as the first product that I am releasing under my new company, Kennedy Camden Auxiliary Percussion.

Any support that anyone can give here would be of great help. I am looking forward to the Rim Shock being a part of everyone's drum kit. Thank you.

Ludwig Supraphonic dilemma

Okay guys, I have a situation and I want to ask you for advice.
I currently own a 14x8 Premier Project One snare drum.
It's a vintage snare drum made out of birch, and it's designed to be a studio snare(dampened snare wires, some other stuff...).
Anyway, I mostly play rock/hard rock music and it really fits into that style, but I'm starting to play some softer stuff like pop rock/funk/latino/jazz with another band and I wanted to get a new snare.
I found a good deal for a used Ludwig Supraphonic 6.5x14 (LM402) and I'm not sure if I should buy that snare, or get a same Ludwig Supraphonic 5 inch deep (LM400), since I already have a deep wooden snare, maybe I should get a shallower(5 inch) metal one?
So, the question is LM402 or LM400 as my next snare, considering I already have a deep(14x8) wooden snare?
Thank you for your replies in advance! :)

Help! Can't keep time without a metronome

Hi! I've been playing drums for 13 years now and for the last 3 years my timekeeping has really taken a turn for the worse.
I can stay in the pocket for maybe 2 or 3 bars before the tempo is either rushing or dragging. It dosen't matter if i'm playing by myself, on rehearsals or on stage. The only thing spinning around in my head when I start a groove is if the tempo fluctuates or not. It's like a mental state that can't stop analyzing.

This led me to stop playing fills completely and I began practicing with a click track that goes silent for several bars( 8 bars with click and 8 without for example) but it seems to have made it even more detrimental to my inner clock.
Prior to that i've always been practicing with a metronome and for the last year I even bring it up on stage.
I can't help feeling like a impotent drummer when I'm dependent on a machine to keep time for me.

Any tips on how I can break this pocket blocking curse? Feel free to correct my terrible grammar btw I hope it's understandable enough.

Amps?

I've been playing with a small jazz group and I'm finding it very hard to get my brush playing loud enough for them to hear. The guitarist and bassist have their small amps and they don't play very loudly and still brushes just don't carry ... even the pianist (just playing on a real piano) has a hard time hearing.

So I've been thinking about attaching one of my drum mics to the snare, running an XLR to 1/4" cable to a mini amp, and seeing if that helps.

Is this a stupid idea?

One thing I know I'll have to be aware of is rim clicks. I'll need to place the mic far away from the area where I click or those will sound like gunshots. But it seems like the idea might work in general.

If it is a stupid idea, any suggestions for making myself heard ... without always playing sticks? Sometimes you need the brushes for swishing.

Question for You Open-handed Drummers

So I started fully playing open-handed a few years back (weak hand leading on hi-hats and ride) to even out my hands and have unobstructed access to the kit at all times.

Well, I am now at the point where my weaker hand is in fact faster than my dominant hand. The odd thing, though, is that from a technique perspective, my dominant hand is still further ahead (except at higher BPMs where my dominant hand breaks down in relation to my weaker hand).

Anyways, is this common for open handed drummers?

Is this a "good" or logical end-result of open-handed drumming? Or am I doing something wrong?

Lest any of you should ask, I regularly practice out of Stick Control, Wilcoxon, work my rudiments and have an instructor, etc. so I don't think I am doing anything "wrong" per se in terms of encouraging an imbalance between my hands. But I am curious how others have approached this issue.

Cheap amp/speaker options for basement jams?

Just graduated college a couple weeks ago and since I've been home I've started making some changes to my acoustic kit. I'm adding a couple of cheap Simmons trigger pads for some experimental sound variety, and I'll be using them with the module from my Simmons SD5K kit that I had with me at school. I'm looking for a way to get the sound output loud enough so that my guitarist friend can hear it amongst the sounds his amp and my acoustic drums/cymbals when we jam in my basement.

I've been doing a bit of research on the web for the past day or two and most of what I've been reading says that I'll need an amp (god help you if it's a guitar amp) specifically made for E-drums (with a keyboard amp appearing to be a popular backup choice), or I need to get some type of PA speakers.

I'm not looking to spend all that much on an amp/speaker since it's not for gigs or anything, it's just for my friend's benefit when we jam. But at the same time I want to make sure I'm getting something that's both compatible and safe to use with my module, and will be loud enough for him to hear. I have some possible products I'm looking at, but I wanted to see if I could get some suggestions and/or advice here first.

Bought a YAMAHA Flying Dragon for $40!!

I've been looking for a Flying Dragon pedal at a decent price for a while but never had any luck, until today!!

The guy I got it from said he only used it a handful of times and that it sat in a box the past ten years, the footboard looks brand new as does the chain, springs, and other components. I replaced the Yamaha beater with a wooden beater and only had to adjust the beater angle and it was dialed in!

Now I need to get rid of my vintage pedals that I was so fond of in a previous thread!

New Audio recording

Hey all! So I just finished my first major foray with my little studio rig.
I'm using a MacBookAir running GarageBand, plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 USB interface (this is the 8-channel one).

AKG D112 is in the bass drum, Shure SM57 on the snare, AKG C418 mics on the toms, and an AKG SE300B pencil condenser as my overhead. I'm adding drums to the classic "Classical Gas", here re-arranged by the California Guitar Trio.

It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool to be able to do something that sounds this ok ;)

Recommended hardware

Hi there! Im new to posting on the form but I read this fourm all the time!

Played drums for over 10 years and I had the same Sonor Force 2005 (Can't exactly remember if that is the Force number but I am away working at the moment) since I started playing and decided to go for everything new!

So I just ordered a Gretsch Catalina Club rock kit with 24" kick in Vintage Pearl White! But looking for recommended hardware for the kit... I want something at a very good quality and strudy. I found with my Sonor kit the high hat stand always needed adjusting etc...

Also I think I'm going to go for Zildjian K Custom pack but with peoples past experiences of them I'd like to ask.. Is the 'Dark' cymbals too dark for playing the likes of Indie music? As I play a varied range of music just didn't know what was the case with these!!

Any help would be appreciated!!

Use your sticks...duh!

I've been trying out ride cymbals left and right and just can't find a sound I care for. Well, it occurred to me today to bring my sticks with me. Cymbals I had written off before suddenly sound good to me. Probably a no brainer for many of you, but for anyone else who didn't think to test cymbals using you're own....you should.
I've been on an extended break from playing, but my stick of choice was and is a Regal tip 8A wood. I took a pair with me today for some more shopping and the difference in what I heard before is night and day in some cases.

Shoulda thought to use my sticks before.

Value of Roland's TD6KX?

Hello,

I'm considering selling my 2006 (?) Roland TD6KX kit, and I was wondering what you guys would make of its value nowadays? It's in good shape. I bought it for 9000 Swedish SEK (about $1000) a couple of years ago.

Thanks!
Nils

I toy around with conga/bongo a bit, but am truly in awe of this guys skills.

Must see if you've ever tried them.
And I think most people who play drums could enjoy or appreciate it.
Well worth the time when you get a chance.

Put a new snare on layaway!

Gretsch Brooklyn Chrome over Brass, 14x5. It'll be my first really good snare, excited to get my hands on it.

Grabbed it for $300 brand new with free shipping.

Suggestions on which heads to throw on there? I'm a big fan of the Brian Blade snare sound, and I like high, open tunings with pleasant overtones, so maybe an ambassador or even diplomat batter would get me there?

Also not sure whether I'll keep the hoops, or swap them for diecast. Thoughts?

Popped in at Andy's for a cup of tea ...

... and came away with this.

Now I know what many people will be thinking and of course they're right, but this little beauty had my name on it the minute I first clapped eyes on it, and when I had an unexpected windfall the other day, the first thing I did was text Andy.

I'm rubbish at taking photos but anyway, please welcome Marlene (that's Marlayna, as in Dietrich, rather than Marleen as in Boycie's missus). She and Michèle complement each other beautifully, which isn't surprising because apparently padauk and zebrano are of the same family.

I cannot tell you how happy I am right now. It's like all my birthdays and Christmases at once. In fact, I said to Andy that it was like getting a pony, and it is: it's beautiful and exciting, and we're going to have so much fun!

Thank you Andy xxxxxxxxx

What Drum Moments Give You the Chills

Thought it would be fun to share those timeless drum moments that you listen to time and time again that still give you the chills. Maybe we'll get some ideas of new stuff to listen to:

- ZZ Top - Jesus Left Chicago from Tres Hombres - The open quarter notes Frank Beard lays into on the hats during the guitar solos at 1:30 and 2:57

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMjqgIZ1_YM

- Genesis - Afterglow from Seconds Out - Chester Thompson and Phil Collins complete and complement each other's fills in an amazing display of chemistry (especially cool is how they split out playing the Zappa fill - no mean feat) in what is for me the emotional high point of a brilliant live album. Check it out from 3:10 onwards

*** sorry can't find a functional link on youtube****

- Billy Cobham -Stratus from Spectrum -

After the helter skelter beginning of random noises and drum runs, Billy Cobham et al settle down and put down one of the great all time grooves at 3:05.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aw2rM0w-pc

- Dream Theatre - Hell's Kitchen - Falling Into Infinity -

Love how Mike Portnoy plays out the final section of the song at 3:18 after locking in with the guitars and keyboards on a multi-bar fill.

So many others, but those are the first that come to mind for me. What about you guys?

Buddy Rich: Two Kinds of Technique I Admired

Buddy Rich: Two Kinds of Technique I Admired

SKF NOTE: Mel Torme's two-part 1978 Down Beat interview with Buddy Rich is one of my all-time favorites. It is a conversation between friends, between first-class musicians, and between people with utmost respect for each other. Both Messers Torme and Rich are relaxed, they've both lived through the experiences discussed.

Compared with the umpteen times I've heard Buddy interviewed on t.v., read Buddy interviewed in magazines and books -- Mel Torme's Down Beat is hands-down the best of the best. It is the interview every Buddy Rich admirer wanted: no wise cracks, just one of the world's greatest drummers talking about drumming.

The DB intro to this interview says, "The interview will be used by Torme in a forthcoming biography of Rich." This interview is so good it raised high the expectations for the Rich biography, published as "Traps - The Drum Wonder: The Life of Buddy Rich" in 1991. In my opinion, the book - while good to have from a historical perspective - was disappointing. This interview is much, much better.

Here's a snippet
:

Buddy Rich: Some of the best drummers I ever heard had no technique at all. [W]henever I played Chicago on Saturday night they used to have a breakfast show for the various entertainers. They always had a line of 16 girls.... I used to go only because Red Saunders was the greatest show drummer that ever lived. He had a 10-piece band, playing all these outside jazz things for the girls to dance to. He was a cue drummer, he would catch every step the girls did. He would catch comics, catch their lines. He had things with the band that were just impossible to know. You just have to instinctively know that this is the way to play.

As far as technique was concerned, he could play a roll if they slipped him a jar of butter. He had no technique, but he had the innate ability to play drums. He wouldn't astound you by playing a solo. He couldn't play a solo, probably.

I was very into that kind of playing, the show type drumming.

And I had a great respect for Billy Gladstone. He used to play snare drum at Radio City Music Hall in New York. I used to go to see him and I used to sit in the last row in the balcony, in the back, only because I wanted to hear his roll. [W]ithout the slightest bit of motion he could almost shatter your eardrum. He had that kind of technique. When he played a roll you couldn't tell if it was a roll or if he had only one stick on the drum. It was that pure. That was the other kind of technique that I admired.

Sport Injuries That Stop You Drumming?

Hey all just wondering how many of you have suffered injuries that have stopped you from playing drums, for a short period, but mostly longer period. Eg not just a broken bone, but a serious recurring nerve or joint issue.

I play football (soccer) and this season have constantly had different injuries, almost not walking away from a game without something. Luckily I heal fast and I my injuries normally don't stick around, it is always something different. Today I badly strained a ligament or tendon that runs down the back of the leg across the back of the knee on the inner side. It feels very troublesome and puts me in a lot of pain to hold my foot off the as if I was playing a kick drum.

Anyway I was just wondering if some of you guys could give me some insight into what types of leg injuries you have or could get that would put your drumming at risk? And what is the chance of receiving one of these injuries playing football/soccer? Just wondering if I should reassess my sporting habits if they will impact on my drumming career.

I'm thinking of buying a 5x14 and was wondering about shell depth. If I want to add a different shell, how tall should it be to fit the free float mechanism?
How about a 6 1/2 inch free floater? What depth shell? Thanks.

My Lust Has Been Satisfied!

Can you tell what it is yet?

:)
My Lust Has Been Satisfied!

The Dunnett strainers have arrived!

I received two of the Dunnett R4-L strainers today and I installed one on my 6.5 Supra, and here are my thoughts:

It is an awesome bit of engineering, it's very smooth, and hefty. I do like the weight to it, which sorta contrasts what someone on here called "Chinese pot-metal" (or is there heavy pot-metal?) Once I got it installed, I played the drum for about an hour, with the tension in various states of adjustment, but mostly on the loose side to test if this knob moves on its own while I'm playing the drum with force.

It hasn't moved at all in any position. I could leave it loose for that sloppy, almost white-noise type of sound, and it stayed there at least as long as I played a heavy groove for about four minutes. Likewise, keeping the snares in a tighter feel you can assume it didn't move either, but I expected that as there's more friction holding it there. The drop lever is buttery smooth (it should be, it's new) - so I'll see if that changes any time soon.

All in all, I think this is a good score. I'll start recommending it to others after I play with the band next week (nothing like seeing how it holds up in a performance situation for four hours), but right now my view is very positive.

It doesn't look like it doesn't belong on the drum (which is something the Trick looks like to me), and I attribute this to the same chrome finish, as opposed to the matte-aluminum finish of the Trick.

I'm now going to install one on my other Ludwig 5" Supraphonic tonight. Peace out ;)

My two kits....

Hello to you all.

Well, here are my two babies...

A TAMA Rockstar DX. Set up as a 4 piece with 12, 16 tom, 14 snare and 22x16 BD. The snare is a Pearl Masters Studio. I have a hybrid mix of K custom bottom hat and an A custom 13" top hat on this kit....sweeeet!

The other is an Aussie Billy Hyde kit. 100% Asian Maple. 10, 12, 14 FT and 22x18 BD. The snare is a steel Billy Hyde factory standard.

Cymbals are a mix of Zildjian, Stagg, Ozman and Sabian.

I play Vic Firth F1 American Classic nylon tip sticks....no other stick will ever be in my hands again.

I am not really into "gear" per say....I prefer to spend my time practicing than driving around to all the local drum departments.

I do need a new throne though ...I bought the billy Hyde kit second hand for $200 AUD from a local pawn shop 2 days ago....was a really, really good bargain.

But the new kit has left me short a drum throne!!!

The drum mutes on the crashes are a home made job using rubber and some yellow felt.

Best regards...Ben.

Ludwig Supralite Test and Groove

Hey guys! So as per my other thread, just recently bought a Ludwig Supralite in a 14 x 6.5" configuration. Here is a clip of me jamming out a bit on it. Any comments or questions welcomed!!

Can you feel this?

This is just a video of me noodling... I have been doing this type of style for a little while and I don't really know what drummer I might be channelling or what style it is in. To me it sort of feels like it's based on a foot ostinato and the hands are fairly behind the beat.

It's probably extra sloppy (though it felt good at the time) because I did this after a night of zero sleep but do you think my ideas are coming through or does it all just sound like rubbish? If so what could I work on or what tips would you offer?

Taking the wrap off

Guys,

I realize there are a ton of refinishing threads here, but I'm not necessarily interested in a complete refinish. What I'd like to do is take the wrap off a set of mahogany drums and just leave them naked with a coat of water seal or some other protectant. Does anyone have any experience with this method and would it affect the sound in any appreciable way? Thanks!

Starclassic Bubinga Elite Vs Starclassic bubinga made in Japan

Hello,
I'm wondering if there is ANY difference (except finish options) between the starClassic bubingas made out of 100% Bubinga wood that were made in Japan before they switched production to China, and the starClassic bubinga elites that Tama offers today.

my second question is about a deal I came across on craigslist.
The deal is for a Tama starClassic BUbinga made in Japan 4 piece shell pack (not the Ellite) that has a 10 12 16 22 configuration for $1400.
Is this a good price for this particular drum kit?

Thanks in advance

Camco LA era kit

Hello drummers,

So maybe you guys have noticed but I have been buying and selling a lot of vintage gear. I even have had a few "holy grail" kits (Gretsch 1960's 12 14 18) but still for modern drums prefer Sonor. It's been interesting trying all these different shell configurations and snares (I stopped counting once I had gone through 20 kits and 40 snares). Now and then I come across a kit that I just want to keep. This would be one of them.

Enjoy!

Are All Snare Drums Created Equal?

I went into a Guitar Center and banged on some snare drums. I discovered that I loved the sound of the Pork Pie Big Black Brass 6.5 X 14 drum. It even sounded better than the Ludwig Black Beauty 6.5 X 14 drum. At the time I assumed it sounded better than the Ludwig BB because of the heads and tuning. Maybe even the room had something to do with the great sound I heard.

Since then I have been to four other Guitar Centers and even a Sam Ash store. And at these five other stores the Pork Pie snares sounded about the same as or even worse than the Ludwig BB snares. I even tweaked the tuning of the snare drums at two of the stores.

My question is this:
If you took 10 of the exact same new snare drums, any metal snare drum of the same manufacturer, and set all of them up in one room with the same heads and the same exact tuning, would they all sound exactly the same?

I am guessing that with wood drums the sound would vary. But can the sound vary with metal drums of the same type and from the same manufacturer?

.
Are All Snare Drums Created Equal?

I believe!!!

So I'm out on a date with the lovely girlfriend. Strolling around Manhattan looking at shops and stuff for her. After shopping for hours she turns to me and says we can go into Guitar Center since I've good to her the whole day. YAAYY ME!

So I make a beeline straight to the drum section. Made a left and boom! I check out the snare wall. I see a Ludwig Supralite with a clearance tag and figured why the hell not? So I set it on a kit and tried it out.

Now I'm far from superstitious but WOW!!! This snare had some serious Ludwig mojo going on. I couldn't believe the sound from just a steel snare! I didnt get to fiddle much with the tuning but that Stock Ludwig head was great. I bought it right then and there.

Fast forward the next day, and I got to really test it out. Switched heads and slapped on a Remo Controlled dot and wow. A perfect marriage. A steel 14 x 6.5" snare that sounds crisp and loud! The crack is amazing. I actually tuned it nice and low. Fat sound right? WOW! I was blown away. I always hated that fat old sound but this totally changed my mind. Such a versatile snare for sub-$200.

I now believe in the Ludwig mojo.
I believe!!!

Drum mics (packages)

Hi guys, I'd like to hit up some research now rather than waiting until it's too late and rushing out and buying the wrong thing. I've recently been getting much more serious about my drumming and am in a band that very well may be playing some venues fairly soon.

I'd like to know, especially from the more serious drummers here, what types of mics do you have, what your set-up is, and lastly, if any of the presorted mic packages have what I should be looking for.

Right now I'm thinking.. 5 piece kit.. so, 1 snare mic, 1 bass mic, 3 tom mics, 2 overheads.

Should I be micing up top and bottom of snare? or perhaps a separate mic on the hi-hat? I don't know. That's why I'm asking here. Please help me make an informed choice.

Thanks in advance, Defender.

Homemade Drum Shells ?

Hey Guys ! First i'd like to excuse my average english, I'm a french guy (QC,Canada) but i'll do my best. I'm looking to start a project with my oldest son, building a drum set from scratch ! We both have our own drum sets to play on but he asked me about building one for fun and it seems like a pretty damn good project !! I was wondering if any members here did it before and, if so, i'd like some tips on witch materials to use. I tought about using either : wood but since wood ain't too flexible and dont own many wood crafting tools (I'm pretty much a metal guy and my garage is pretty much filled with welding machines,Pipe bender, sheet bender, metal saws and stuff mostly used for car custom fabrications) & I always hated working with wood for some reason lol, PVC (large pipes cuts), Acrylic (bend it), Plexiglass (seems like pain in the a$$), aluminium (My favorite option so far but have concerns about sounding too ''echo''. Any other ideas ? Any opinions ? I Don't completely remove wood from the list if you guys can guide me.

thanks in advance!!

Homemade Drum Shells ?

Cheap snare refurb!

jeudi 28 mai 2015

Hi!

Normally, I am a lurker here, so I thought I would post my little project as a contribution :)

A few months ago, I found a snare drum being thrown away (together with a drum set and a few cymbals). I saved all I could carry, and the snare was one of those things. It was an old Hy-Lo snare drum (one of those old Japanese stencil drums), and it had the original snares, bottom head, hoops, snare butt, and a damaged strainer. Got it home and cleaned it up, slapped new heads on it, and jammed a screw into the strainer so that it would operate, and I had myself a nice little snare!

It was a playable snare. I couldn't turn off the snares, but other than that, it was pretty serviceable. Eventually, when a couple of lugs snapped, I started fixing it up a little. First, I replaced all the lugs with those black beavertail lugs (Slingerland, I believe?) That was less than $20, so yay!! Next was the strainer. A drums store nearby was clearing out their drum inventory, so I snagged a Gibraltar strainer for about $18. Definitely not OEM, but it also didn't have a bolt making it operational... And thus she was done.

However, one thing that always bugged me was the wrap. It was....well.... hideous. I mean, I could use all kinds of colorful descriptions, but I'll let you see it (now that it isn't on the drum). Surprised it was kinda see through!

Hy-Lo Snare drum rebuild! by Juan, on Flickr

Sorry, never got any before pics of the drum...

A few days ago, I decided to do something about it. After reading all the stories on here on how people modified and restored their drums, I felt inspired to do something to this one lol. My biggest worry was the removal of the wrap. Since it is an old stencil drum, I thought the wood underneath would be terrible. And if it wasn't, the glue that held the wrap to the drum would surely damage it. Once I undid the wrap (which required a little snapping at the seam), it just fell away! The only thing holding it to the shell was the air vent. Removed that with some pliers, and it all came off. So, success!!!!

First thing I did was sand the shell a bit. I don't mind a little texture, but this was a little rougher than I hoped. So, I started with 150 grit sandpaper, then 200, and finished with 600. The top layer was perfectly smooth, but you still had some of the grooves from the wood (cheap pine? No clue.)

Hy-Lo Snare drum rebuild! by Juan, on Flickr

So, smooth as it was, it needed some color. I decided to go with some stain from Lowe's. Since it is a small drum, I just got one of those small sample cans ($5). The color was a walnut type color. Painting it was extremely easy, and probably the last easy thing about the build.

Hy-Lo Snare drum rebuild! by Juan, on Flickr

Once the stain dried up, it got sanded a bit more and once again perfectly smooth. Then came the clear coat. I had some DEFT (I think that is the name) in the house, and decided to use it. Great gloss, and went on pretty well. The biggest issue, however, was humidity. It was taking entirely too long for the coats to dry out. According to the can, I could have put on a coat every two hours, but it was more like every day. After about 5 coats, I give up (no end in sight for the humidity). Gave the coat a little polish with 1500 sandpaper, and all was good!

Eventually, started putting it back together. Hoops got polished and cleaned as much as possible, but some of the spots where the chrome had oxidized couldn't be saved :( Put everything back on there, and tuner her up.

Hy-Lo Snare drum rebuild! by Juan, on Flickr

The good:
--Weight. One thing that REALLY stood out while working on her is her weight, or lack thereof. I guess the shell is rather thin (probably why it has re-rings?). With it being a 6 lug snare, it has less weight on the shell, too. It is easily the lightest snare I own.
--Tuning. I wish my other snares tuned this easily. Despite it using snare wires from the 70's (or whenever it was from), they sound very good and have that vintage sound to them.
--It's pretty! Well, at least I think so...

The bad:
--Tuning. The side effect of the 6 lugs and such a thin shell--I don't dare crank it up, lest I might break something. Tension at the lugs is as high as I can safely take it, but the tuning on the drum is on the medium scale. Which I do like (I have HORRIBLE luck tuning medium on my drums...).
--The badge. This is rather OCD of me, but I like having the "Evans" logo and the badge line up. If I do this on the drum, the strainer is literally on my right knee, which makes playing a pain in the butt. Had to make a sacrifice in that department...

The ugly:
That damn badge!!! Ahem. Just as I was putting it all together and tightening the last rod, I noticed I hadn't put the thing back on!!!! Ended up just popping in there with the vent grommet. The metal is bent enough so that it is somewhat flush with the shell, but it isn't actually affixed to the wood. I might used a couple of bolts later to secure it to the shell.

Overall, I can't really complain about the drum or the project. I learned a good bit about drum work, woodworking, not swearing around the kids, and having some patience when doing things like this. The only thing that I would not mind doing to her last is getting some black 6 lug rims; I think it would go well with both the finish and the lugs.

Here are a few more pics of the little drum that could ;)
