The Marcus Williams Fill

With my next lesson approaching on the March 3rd, I'm going over the list of stuff that I'm supposed to have covered since last time. One of the items on my to-do list that I feel I've fallen short on is "The Marcus Williams Fill".

Hitting youtube, I've found the following:

I've been working on it for a week, and will continue to work on it till lesson time. What I think I'm missing is the context. I've watched a bunch of MW, and can 'kinda-sorta' tell when he's using the pattern by the BD cadence, but have not yet been able to make use of the pattern in any of my imagined or improvised compositions.

Does anyone have any suggested instructional or clear-cut performance examples of this pattern/fill? Is there any advice that you can offer?

Currently, I feel like I'm playing the notes in order and on time without any understanding of why. I'm hoping that there's a karate-kid wax-on-wax-off epiphany in the near future.
